possible release date for The Hobbit UJ soundtrack ?? Can't Post

A poster at Doug's blog found this entry at Amazon which lists a December 11 release date for a 2 disc, Deluxe edition of TH/UJ soundtrack.

Now, other listings were found earlier that Doug either shot down or looked dodgy.

This one was declared to be 'inaccurate' by Doug.

Another listing looked kind of dodgy to me. Doug pointed out that they got the artist wrong - they listed the artist as 'The Hobbit' and I was made wary but the 'export' label on it.

But the first link I sent you to does list the label as Water Tower Music (a branch of WB) which is the company that seems to be handling the Hobbit soundtracks.

Earl found another listing at Amazon which does not say Deluxe and costs less than the Deluxe listing. The release date is the same and this also says the label is 'Water Tower Music'.

Many might remember that the LOTR soundtracks - the OSTs released in conjunction with the movie - came in a regular, jewel case edition and a deluxe leatherette edition (called Limited Editions or LE).

As far as music goes, the FOTR and FOTR LE were the same. The TTT LE had one additional track that the regular TTT did not have. And the ROTK LE had an extra DVD with a good amount of extras on them.

So there is some history of Limited or Deluxe editions.

As I said, Doug commented on the two suspect listings but has not commented on this latest, Water Tower Music listing. It could be that he is busy. :-) Or, it could be he can't. He must let all news come from official channels and, other than this listing, there has not been any official statement or press release.

For my part, I don't see any benefit in ordering this early. I will wait to make sure the button I click to buy gets me the real, official CD and I want to know more about the Deluxe edition (should it be accurate) before I choose. I am just posting this for consideration of the possible release date.

December 11th would help my restraint [In reply to] Can't Post

I absolutely love Howard Shore's music for The Lord of the Rings and am looking forward to his music for The Hobbit almost as much as I'm looking forward to the film as a whole.

But rather than listen to it over and over and over again before the film as I did for Return of the King - which resulted in me being pulled ut of some scenes slightly on first viewing when a particularly memorable or familiar piece of music from the soundtrack was used - I plan to listen to An Unexpected Journey's soundtrack once before the film. Just enough to get a taste of it and settle my curiousity but not enough for me to memorise it by any stretch.

If it had been released a week, two weeks earlier then that plans might have been thrown out of the window thanks to my weak willpower. If the December 11th (which I suppose would be the 10th for the UK as we get our releases on the Monday) date holds true then that'll greatly aid me in my plan as I hopefully won't have the time to be tempted!

you might take a look at amazon.uk [In reply to] Can't Post

and see if they have a listing, and if so, what date. It could help confirm or confuse the issue.

For that matter, it would be worth looking at other major online retailers who sell CDs. Not that I'm going to do that! But I know we have lots of avid researchers here.

I will get it as soon as possible and listen to it as much as possible before seeing the movie. As I've said before, it ups my connection to the movie and the music to have the music already imprinted when I see the action happening.

Interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

So if this accurate, it would be consistent (roughly) with the TTT release, but much later than the FOTR and ROTK releases, correct? Any insight into the benefits/drawbacks of a later release versus an earlier one?

I've had a quick look, but amazon.co.uk don't have a listing up. [In reply to] Can't Post

But they are normally behind anyway, so if this is the real thing, one might expect a new listing sometime soon.

11th December sounds good to me! I'll ask for it for Christmas so I won't be tempted to buy it myself. Cool

no insights from me [In reply to] Can't Post

I just figure that there are probably two major factors that determine release dates.

ONE: when can they get it manufactured and in the stores? We know that these guys edit the film and, therefore, edit and often rerecord the music right up to the deadline. Shore put it as they drag the film out of their hands. The earlier they record the soundtrack, the less likely it is to fit with the actual movie's score. TTT's OST was quite different from the final cut of the movie's score. (go figure, since, as you pointed out, that was the latest release date. They must have been editing that thing right up to the wire)

TWO: marketing. soundtrack and song releases help create buzz. Buzz helps sell tickets. They can't let the buzz peak too early to benefit ticket sales. They know we will buy the soundtrack and we will buy tickets. They aren't 'marketing' to us so much as the casual movie goer who will be deciding what movie to go see on the weekend. (although I just looked to see what else is being released that weekend and ew.com has no other movie opening that weekend. lol)

Those that have a keen interest in any pre soundtrack release promos might want to check out Water Tower Music on Facebook or Twitter.

It's not uncommon for labels to start trickling out samples or even full length tracks for listening in the weeks leading up to a soundtrack's release date.

btw, they said: “This has been an extraordinary year for us, the strongest we’ve ever had,” commented WaterTower Music head Jason Linn. “And we anticipate a robust year-end with new music from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

Yup, they premiered HS's "Forth Eorlingas" from the TTT score on a radio show geared toward classical/film music. // [In reply to] Can't Post

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

LOL [In reply to] Can't Post

I noticed too. Thanks again, Magpie--great as usual.

The later the better, for me--that way I can avoid being spoiled--though I don't know how I'll do that this time!
Yes, the later, the better--I want them working until the last second, considering the late news about a trilogy--I woudn't expect this to come together too quickly. As you said, they'll be editing frantically right to the end. I just hope the sudden trilogy newd didn't hack up the structural narrative of the score too much...

... It shall be my precioussss
Howard Shore is such an amazing composer and an inspiration, after the wonderful LotR music (that I listen to very often), I can't wait to see what else he has in store for the Hobbit!

Thanks for this... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the heads up, Magpie, Smile

I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for the LE releases, as that is what I went for last time.

I also remember that the Classic FM radio station over here previewed tracks from each of the LotR soundtracks on their "album of the week" slot, so hopefully they will do the same for The Hobbit. It was hearing those tracks that brought the release of FotR to my attention, back in 2001.
