Thank goodness. I'd hate to have to hold my [In reply to] Can't Post

knees together waiting for someone to unlock it whenever I get there.

I went to an office building in Chicago last year and that was the first time I've ever come across a locked restroom door. What the hey? Do people there steal the toilet paper or something that makes it necessary to lock the door to the TOILET?

How very cool! (literally) [In reply to] Can't Post

I've read all the books about Shackleton's trip to Antarctica and the subsequent heroic trip across the spine of South Georgia. I also have a fascination with journeys in cold, inhospitable places. So I envy you!

Had to laugh when you said you were shy about posting at first. Reminds me of a college friend who once said that he was really shy in high school, but had finally come out of his shell. "And now everyone's trying to figure out how to get me back in." Going far, far away is definitely "retreating."

Can't wait to hear all about it when you come back. And we will be needing lots of pictures.

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.

Just kidding, I read the whole thing. Wink

Congrats on reaching immortality! Do you have assess to TORn's secret stash of spoilers now?

Your trip south sounds remarkable. I'm jealous that you'll be waking up to all that gorgeous scenery each day. Not so jealous that you'll be studying wind, though Tongue

I hope you have a great time, and you know we'll still be expecting daily TORn posts, even if you have to use dial-up!

That is a true honor DanielLB and you earned it fair and square, with quality and a caring 'deNICEr' too. It is an honor to have you among us adding life to the positive energy. All three of you are very special spirits i will add.

Your venture sound truly intriguing and it is a very worthy and important one as well. We all are on the edge of real climate change and the more awareness that is brought forth, is so vital.

The pictures are so striking. The air so clear. That area has a beauty all of its own.

You must be one of a handful of people that know where South Georgia is when I mention it [In reply to] Can't Post

It's such a heroic and remarkable story, isn't it. I'm so looking forward to visiting his grave on the island - he was a true hero. And to think how easy it is to get there now.

I'm surprisingly more shy in really life than many would believe. I think it's easier to express yourself online, than in public. Plus you're surrounded with people with the same passion. Wink That's helps considerably!

I've was sent on health and safety, first aid, and sea survival training courses the other week. I'm prepared for anything! Apart for dancing penguins! Laugh

As it's summer when I go down, the research station will be (relatively) busy, with other scientists from other institutions. There's 5 in our group, and I think the maximum overall number will be about 50 people. In winter it's only roughly 10 people. And on Bird Island (to the north of the island), there's only 4 of them during the winter!

Thanks silneldor. Smile

The Southern Ocean is one of the roughest places ... And I get sea-sick (TORn needs a sick smily!)

I'll be getting a ship from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia. That takes 4 days ... depending on the weather and how rough it is! It may also be a commercial ship (rather than a research ship). So I might have to gut some fish! Crazy

On the posting milestone and your upcoming research trip. Funnily (sadly) enough, there were a couple articles on just your topic, the dangerous shift in the southern winds, on National Public Radio here in the US recently. Let's see... *rummages around on internet* oh, here they are! (the first two articles in the search page)

Travel well as you do your part to make the world a better place! I firmly believe that fundamental research like you're doing has exactly that effect, diminishing our ignorance and opening our minds to the next questions our research uncovers. What a marvelous, huge world we live in - and how little we know of it!

Thank you Arandiel :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

And thank you for the link - a large portion of that is the justification for my research. The first link is interesting. I didn't listen to the interview, but I read the article, but it doesn't say whether they are a scientist or not? One interesting thing they didn't mention is that warming over the Antarctic continent benefits ice growth, as warm air can hold more water vapour, thus, theoretically, increasing snow in the interior of the continent. On the exterior (the bits next to the ocean), changing ocean and atmospheric circulations are reducing sea ice. They vaguely touch on that point, but don't say it explicitly.

It doesn't happen in the Arctic since climate change pushes temperatures above freezing point, thus reducing snow fall.

Geek mode off. Tongue
