Anybody planning anything special for Durin's Day? Can't Post

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda, Durin's Day falls on October 15th this year, a week from tomorrow. I'm planning a few things: perhaps a marathon watching of LOTR EE's, cooking some hobbity food (Sam's coney stew and some twice-cooked cakes), perhaps even a viewing of the old Rankin Bass chestnut (if I can stomach hearing that horrible song again. And I suppose an offering and a nice toast to our friendly neighborhood thrush at sunset/moonset would be appropriate.

Does anybody else have any suggestions or ideas for celebrating this momentous day?

Watching all the production videos back-to-back sounds like a great way to spend (some of) the day! / [In reply to] Can't Post

Is it a true Durin's Day? [In reply to] Can't Post

The Encyclopedia of Arda only states that October 15 would be the start of the Dwarvish new year this year. Durin's Day doesn't happen every new year.

So will it actually be Durin's Day this year? That would be fascinating indeed during such a great year for The Hobbit! Of course, simply being the Dwarvish new year is as fine a reason to celebrate as any.

That sounds like an excellent way to celebrate it. [In reply to] Can't Post

I am going to have a marathon LotR closer to the release of The Hobbit, but the production videos, which are loaded with dwarves, sounds best for Durin's Day.

A riddle there [In reply to] Can't Post

Wait a minute, how can it be Durin’s Day on some dwarf new years and not on others. And how can you see the new moon? it's basically dark with no crescent. This is all so confusing. Can it be some kind of… riddle?
I am the token of the Dwarve’s new year. I rise invisible on my renewal day, but to honor of the lord of the Khazâd I show my thin crescent with the setting sun on Durin’s Day.

Here’s my answer to the riddle: The peak moment when the moon is new occurs sometime during a 24 hour day. If the new moon occurs in the predawn hours (after midnight), and there is at least fourteen hours before sunset/moonset, you may see the crescent moon setting with the sun in and it will be Durin’s Day.

"But this will not help us much, I fear, for it passes our skill in these days to guess when such a time will come again."

Sounds good to me! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm hankering to grab a key and watch for a crack to appear in the rocks out back. YOU NEVER KNOW!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
