No. [In reply to] Can't Post

Even if the rights were available, which they are not and won't be for many years, it can't be made into a single movie, or even 3 movies. A high-quality TV miniseries, maybe, but a challenge even then.

Impossible! [In reply to] Can't Post

They said the world was flat.

It was round.

The said if man could fly, he'd have wings.

He flew.

They said the sound barrier could never be broken.

They did.

They said The Lord of the Rings was unfilmable.

They filmed it.

They said a Silmarillion feature is unfilmable.

Really?

They said warp speed could not be accomplished.

Oh, wait...

I love the book but The only version of the sil I would want to see is one directly involving the Tolkien estate, (which will never happen, and they aren't in the know ehn it comes to filmaking anyway), tolkein spent almost 50 years writing and shaping that book on and off, with his son doing the final touches, given how much LOTR changed from the books, I personally think in a way it would a bit insulting of PJ to even try it. He was directly quouted as saying:

'Sure its not really Lord of the Rings but it could be a pretty cool movie anyway'

(I'm a massive purist when it comes to the sil...)

The sil is so differnt from Tolkien's other works (incest betrayal, murder, outright religous imagery, a 600 year main storyline) that the only way PJ would able to get funding would be to change it dramtically, remember he primarily makes the films for people who haven't read the books, no offense to people who haven't read the book but I dread to think how he would change it to simply it-There's no hobbits or gandalf so where's the marketing hook?

He would only get funding if he could tie it in with his existing films-given how most of the connecting material was missed out in LOTR films I can't see how he would do this, personally for me his films were at the worst when deviating too much from the source material, the silmarillion is really only a summary of what was intended so would require alot of re-writing and guesswork to turn into a film, This isn't designed as hate thread against pj, I simply think the book is too hard to adapt and remain faifthful for anyone, whilst still being populist for non-book readers.

But hey that's just my feelings, you never know I could change my mind come december...Smile

I'd like to see it happen, but I doubt it will. [In reply to] Can't Post

I do believe it could be scripted (not as a movie but as a miniseries on TV) but rights aside--I just doubt it will happen.

I don't think anyone should The Sil... [In reply to] Can't Post

... not the whole thing, anyway. Too much stuff would be cut out due to time constraints and we'd end up with a hatchet job.... no thanks!

Now a mini-series, with free rein... THAT I'd go for, as long it wasn't campy, cheesy, or HBO-esque graphic.

mini-series / anthology series [In reply to] Can't Post

The mini-series format for longer stories in the Sil. But the anthology series format for visiting individual stories that might not overtly connect to any other episode.

Nope. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's highly unlikely that he could get the screenrights anyway. Even ignoring that, Jackson needs an original project at this point to get his creative juices flowing and recharge the old batteries.

Dont think he should. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think PJ probably needs to get away from ME and make a film about something els, like he did at the end of lotr trilogy.

For me i think a mini series would work better but i would want it to have movie sized budget and directors. I dont think PJ would be suited to making a mini series of the silmarillion.

Saying that i dont think a mini series would work as i dont think they would get a big enough audience and ultimately i think it is just fine to have this book left as a book. Sometimes less is more Smile

Given a choice between [In reply to] Can't Post

an existing story and one no one has heard yet, I'd vote for the latter.
But if the Sil were ever filmed, I think it would be worth seeing.

While it could be done, I don't see the entire Silmarillion story appealing to audiences. A bit too Creationist at the beginning, it would offend religious audiences. It is a book without a clear ending.

The only start-to-finish character is Melkor, the antagonist. It is better for movies to have the protagonist to focus on from start to finish.

I can see parts of it as a movie, but not all of it. Turin, sure. A Beren and Luthien love story would be possible. I could also see a mini-series or TV show about the fall of the sons of Feanor.
