Good news to be sure, but I wonder when the press release was made, before or after the decision to make two films into three?
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

I think all of this applies to 85% of the added scenes in the (LotR) extended editions. Considering The Hobbit has now somehow been turned into a trilogy, I suspect the additions to the upcoming EEs will be extra-extraneous. Like, Bombur farts galore or something like that. There will be no great scenes added because there is absolutely no excuse this time to leave a great scene out of the theatrical editions. That means nothing like the Faramir-Boromir scenes, or anything as evocative as the passing of the elves in FotR. I really hope they treat the theatrical versions as the definitive versions, because they can certainly afford to do that this time. Any other approach would be gravely cynical.
If you listen to the LotR commentaries, a relatively small number of the extra scenes were cut due to time. Most were cut because: - They were redundant or just didn't add anything
- They messed up the pacing
- They didn't fit with the tone of the film
- They damaged characters
- They weren't very good

I do fear that WB will pull a similar bad move to the studio-mandated theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven, which was downright awful compared to the director's cut. Also, when did the film become "The Unexpected Journey" versus "An Unexpected Journey?" Is that just a typo in the logo TORN is using?

The history they are using is very important for illuminating both the rationale behind the quest, and the personal animosity between the dwarves and goblins. Almost none of this will be axed (pun intended) for the theatrical version, because it sits at the center of the main antagonisms in the film. That is almost guaranteed, IMO. They might shave some of it off, but no way it all goes.

Some more filming was done for AUJ, involving Bolg in particular. Just an FYI.

I was wondering about it too... I'm pretty sure that's an old fan made logo from a while ago, so it's probably not official.

WB has had success with longish films; I don't see any reason to believe that they will do that.

Studios just hate Ridley Scott Don't know what it is about the guy. The man just likes to put him down every time he shows them up. The Hobbit is an established brand and PJ as a great amount of control over it, so I doubt they're going to slice out "necessary content" like was done with Kingdom of Heaven (which was R rated, period piece, and a bit high minded in and of itself). What we will see on screen will perhaps be more complete to some eyes than Fellowship was, though your mileage will vary on what "complete" really is. They will undoubtedly break the two hour mark, though I don't know by how much.

Remember the classic anecdote about how they were filming after the movie had already won best picture? That was done solely for the EE. Besides, remember they're doing pick-ups and a few months of extra filming next year, it's not exactly hard for them to shoot some more sound stage stuff. (Location might be a different story, but considering that even Rivendel is in the studio now, I imagine they have a lot of freedom). Pretty much at this point, if Peter wants it, he'll get it. And if not, they'll just sneak it into the fine print of the schedules ; )

If they've already got the actors required down there, and the sets, then a couple of re-shot or new scenes wouldn't break the bank, would it? And EE sales must be through the roof anyway.

were they finishing for that BTW? Yes, I remember that ancedote at the time...thought it was hilarious...until the EE came out...and I was floored. And Captain Salt...my thoughts exactly (posting in the wrong thread as usual with first reactions....:) But Bombadil I agree....I wish I could have your blind optimism! I am really curious now! (Please, let the running times be 2 hrs 25 mins or something....I can live with that!)
