Keep in mind that since 2001 a little something called Facebook was invented, and Twitter. And in the place of joining a fan club, you 'Like' the Hobbit or Peter Jackson and get insider updates through there. Fan clubs might have been more necessary 11 years ago, but the internet is so easily accessible now, there really isn't any reason to.

For those saying it's simply that Warner Brothers doesn't care, they are the ones that ultimately are giving Peter the go ahead to release footage, clips, photos, trailers on his Facebook group.

I just really don't see the purpose of fan clubs in this day and age, when an infinite number of fan websites, like TORn exist. Unless it's just to get your name in the extended credits of the film, but, again, I don't really see the purpose.
