Aaaaaa!!! Doesn't that face put the fear of death into you? I found this short scene with Uglúk coming after Merry and Pippin probably the scariest in the trilogy, and I think that the way that it was filmed contributed greatly (a long with a brilliant acting Orc and voice work). PJ made this part very shifty and used these jerky close-up shots whilst the camera moved back along with Uglúk... 
1. Which scene in the trilogy was the scariest in your opinion, and how does it rank with this one?
2. What strikes you about this particular cap? (thinking of colour, lighting and composition)
3. What strikes you about Uglúk?
Silly Q: Do you think Merry and Pippin would have survived if it weren't for the timely intervention of Treebeard?

Shelob, definitely. It just nails the horror so right, but I absolutely love the way this one comes about. It's an example of how frantic pace can create some incredibly tense moments, and seeing that creature come out of the glade yelling always gets me good!
2. What strikes you about this particular cap? (thinking of colour, lighting and composition)
That moonlight seems awfully bright for and overgrown place like Fangorn. Could have toned that down a little. Otherwise, I like Fangorn and its atmosphere. It works for me, and the prop department did a spectacular job making it feel real.
3. What strikes you about Uglúk?
His ferocity, his swiftness, and his music! Also love the long faced look of him which gives him that desirably hateable quality!
Silly Q: Do you think Merry and Pippin would have survived if it weren't for the timely intervention of Treebeard?
Unfortunately, they didn't have their knives, so I think we'd have to say goodbye to our little hobbit friends...

The path's of the dead freaked me out, and so did Shelob far more than any of the orcs, but the passion and hatred in this scene made it one of the great parts of the movie for me.

So much angst and hatred for such small sweet creatures. Love the blue closeness of Fangorn.
3. What strikes you about Grishnak?
He is one of the more human orcs in the face. but I suppose it was needed as he had a good bit of talking to do in a close confined space. I actually really preferred his look to a lot of the other orcs who seemed to have a lot of trouble opening their mouths to speak or make noise.

If there were enough stones of size about their feet then I think they would have made it out alive and old Grishnak would have a caved in face ala' David versus Goliath in Hobbit form.

it's just that I questioned if that was Ugluk (as you said) or Grishnakh (which I thought it was). You didn't respond to that.
Then SA said it was Grishnakh and you said, 'yeah, right'. I couldn't figure out why you wouldn't have questioned your use of Ugluk when I posted but then I thought perhaps you missed the question in the subject line.
And now you say 'na, Shelob's right' to me... as if I was wrong. I said, essentially, the same thing as SA. I just said it by asking you to confirm or change the name you were using instead of telling you it was wrong.
I think it's one of those times when I get really confused by the conversation! :-/

My sincere apologies. I posted too hastily, not having seen your response.
I think Xanaseb's response, however, is due to the fact that your post was framed as a question: "Is this Ugluk or Grishnakh?" Xan, it seems, is just responding to that question, and responding to the fact that I seemed to have answered the question with: "It's Grishnakh."
Hopefully, the world still turns!

I wasn't upset. Just immensely puzzled and sometimes, I just can't walk past a puzzle without solving it.
I think what was missing were subtle nuances of voice that put different meanings on things. It reminds me of a story an ESL (English as Second Language) teacher I worked with told about a new student she had who didn't speak English. The other children were trying to pronounce the new student's name for her. They'd say it (and it wasn't that difficult) and she'd repeat it back. But every time she repeated it back, they'd all giggle as if she'd made a silly mistake. This went on for awhile till she worked out that, when she repeated the name back, she was giving her voice a rise at the end as she was essentially asking a question (implied: this is the way you say it?). When she gave the name a rise at the end, it turned the name from masculine to feminine (or vise versa) into a name for someone of the opposite gender as the new student. The kids thought that was funny - and probably a little dense for the teacher!
I think reading 'nah' and even my original question with different nuances of voice change the meaning of the sentences. And I really did think that perhaps my subject line had been overlooked which made me question my habit of using the subject line to start my train of thought.
