Tolkien Society to unveil J.R.R. Tolkien commemorative plaque in Leeds Can't Post

The Tolkien Society has announced that a 'blue plaque, ' (a.k.a. historical marker), will be unveiled at 2 Darnley Road, West Park, Leeds, commemorating the time J.R.R. Tolkien lived there. J.R.R. Tolkien became Reader in English language at the University of Leeds and went on to be made Professor of the English Language at the university. In 1924 Tolkien bought the semi-detached property on Darnley Road and the family lived there for over a year before Tolkien’s election to the Rawlinson and Bosworth chair of Anglo-Saxon saw them return to Oxford in 1926.

Dr Kersten Hall, graduate of St Anne’s College, Oxford and Visiting Fellow to the Faculty of Arts at the University of Leeds will unveil the plaque on the 1st of October 2012 at 11:30 a.m. local time. As soon as it's unveiled, we'll update this story with a picture of the plaque. Stay tuned.

Plaque? [In reply to] Can't Post

Don't get me wrong, plaques are good. I was hoping for a statue though. Like, fifty meters tall.

To honour Tolkien [In reply to] Can't Post

This is so wonderful. What a great way to celebrate how special Professor Tolkien has been... and still is.

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Excellent :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you so much, geordie!

I like the Headington plaque better ;) So personalized! I know the blue must be the standard plaque... like the Centennial Home plaques put on farms/homesteads owned by the same family for at least 100 years in our rural areas.
