Magpie's birthday mathom Can't Post

Before I do anything else, I'd like to give a little shout out to (for) my fellow 9-30 birthday peeps: Sabsi, my fellow LOTR soundtrack fan; Jim, my co-worker; Percie, my husband's late grandmother, and a TORnsib who will surely be round today to offer her own mathom.

What can I say, I think New Year's Eve was a rockin' night for lots of people. :-)

My mathom this year is an updated reprise of the one I offered 5 years ago: Tolkien Quote Cards.

A number of years ago, I had a friend I was hoping to support through a difficult time and I came up with the idea of making her a set of cards she could pull out that held an inspiring or amusing Tolkien quote - with an illustrative image - to give her a little dose of Tolkien in moments when she needed them.

Recently, I found myself doing the same for another friend and decided to add to my collection. Some of you may remember that I reached out for some of your favorite quotes. I probably added another dozen cards to the existing collection and updated a few images.

So, here is my updated collection of Tolkien Quote Cards for all my friends in Tolkien.
http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/quotecards/index.htm

In the past, I offered a set of print quality pdfs. These take a bit of work for me to get ready and I suspect not many people actually print these out. This time around, I dropped the pdfs from the website. But I have them and if someone would like a particular card for printing, I could probably be convinced to make that pdf available. :-)

I also have these cards in a limited access Picasa album. I think this will be an easier format to go back and find your favorite, but I suggest you use the link above for at least your first time viewing. There are some notes on the final page of the collection on my website that aren't in the Picasa album.

cheers.

Now that's a wastebasket worth having ;-) [In reply to] Can't Post

What a beautiful, bountiful mathom. Menelvagor made me a little teary-eyed for some reason. And it was fun to see old friends in there; the Hildebrandt versions of Tom and Goldberry.

A very, very happy birthday to you, dear Magpie.

Happy Birthday, Magpie! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a nice thing to wake up to this a.m.: a look through your quote cards. Smile I love the photos, drawings and painting you've paired with the quotes. I've bookmarked it this time!

I hope you have a wonderful birthday! SmileHeart

Addendum: [In reply to] Can't Post

Your mention of other people with the same birthday prompted me to look up the date: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_30. I knew about Truman Capote. But I didn't know about Rumi (!). Now that's a birthday-peep worth having!

Wow! I might actually [In reply to] Can't Post

want to impose on you for one or 2 sometime! What a wonderful idea.

I think my favorite is page 3 about the Hobbits watching thew stars with the elves, and of course the later one of the statue of the king--the head crowned with flowers. One of the most moving passages in the books, for me.

Happy Birthday once again, and May Your Feathers Grow Ever Longer . . . Heart

And for those who think all you do is Cards, Calendars, and of course Kindness :) here's [In reply to] Can't Post

a little poem about the Mathom House project: http://newboards.theonering.net/forum/gforum/perl/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_threaded;post=256704;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;

A Little Thank you Poem for Magpie

The Boards go ever on and on,
Sparked by the Tales where they began.
Now far ahead the Boards have gone,
And much has vanished in the span.

Pursuing that with eager beak,
The many paths and treasures lost,
Our Magpie 'round each corner seeks
To save the past that has been lost.

Far over the mounds of Histr'y old,
Through mathom heaps and post-ers bold,
She toils away ere break of day
To save our long forgotten gold!

For! all that is gold does not glitter,
Sometimes it's misplaced or gets lost.
The past, it is wrong to let wither,
Deep roots aren't just trinkets or dross.

For that passion, we offer a token
Of thanks for delight that shall spring,
From reading the posts we have spoken, in
The Mathom House of The One Ring (.net)

wow... [In reply to] Can't Post

that made tear up a little.

History has become important to me. Maybe it's the 6 decades of living. It's not so much a history of the world. But the history of our lives. Where we lived. Families. Favorite tv shows when our kids were 6. What that corner looked like before the parking lot went in. The spice cake recipe our grandmother made.

What I can do to un-earth TORn's history so others can use it to understand the history of movies, the history of fans, the history of net journalism... is my pleasure.

Thanks so much for the lovely mathom gifts and for all you do around here -- including making me a Tech Princess! You have also been a wonderful voice for civility and respect in the midst of hobbit speculation run rampant. Was not easy, but you did it. My gift to you is a free trip to the Houses of Healing with Legolas! You've earned it!

Here's hoping for a wonderful year ahead for you! And just think, next year at this time you'll be IMMORTAL! (You are almost there you know --Smile)

Aw, and what you wrote made me tear up! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been on a looking backward journey of late in my life, and you are right, it's the little moment memories that matter most as I look back.

And the M-H has been a source of headaches as well as pleasures, I know, though you are too polite to say so...as all labors of love are! It's been wonderful to see the project grow and blossom under your care...you've made sure to build it well, and from that good foundation, much good will come, I know!

"The Hobbits bowed low. 'Most gracious host', said Frodo, 'It was said to me by Elrond Half-Elven that I should find friendship upon the way, secret and unlooked for. Certainly I have found no such friendship as you have shown. To have found it turns evil to great good."
