"Down, down to Goblin Town" in TH?

After watching the 1977's version of TH again, I asked myself... will there be a small reference in Peter Jacksons movies to this classic cinematic version of the story? We know that there are some references to the 1978's LOTR in Peter Jacksons version (e.g. "Proudfeet!") and that it inspired Jackson. Wouldn't it be great to hear some references in Howard Shores score? Perhaps the "Goblin Theme" could include a reference to the famous "Down, down to Goblin Town" from 1977. Of course a more Shore-like version of it, but a reference would be cool, wouldn't it? It is funny because among all these commentaries about first screenshots of goblin town was at least one quote of this song per picture. I always liked that song but wasn't aware of that "cultural impact" of it

What reference would you like to see/hear in Peter Jacksons movies? Or do you think it's unnecessary?

neither does the melody fit into the scene as it should be quite a terrifying one, nor would it be cool if the goblins sang :D

The line doesn't come from Rankin-Bass, it's straight from the books. And I think there's an excellent chance it will be spoken or chanted somewhere along the way, perhaps along with "where there's a whip, there's a way".

No, that song won't be included. I give it a 0% chance, that music has no part in the PJ Middle-Earth. However, we may see some scenes that use the same camera angles, considering PJ copied multiple Bakshi scenes.

That music's awful - and I can't see any possibility at all that they would use stuff from another film when they have Howard Shore writing the score for this one.
But the words 'down, down to Goblin town' are straight out of Tolkien, so they might feature somewhere.

I hope Howard Shore uses some of the Dwarven songs like they used Misty mountains in the score and maybe The Road goes ever on? I am hoping for some Elven songs as well.

I don't want the same melody as in the 1977's movie, but perhaps a single goblin who grins at the dwarves saying this one sentence "hehehe down, down to goblin-town" in a very creepy way. That would be all it needs. It's not really a reference to the classic movie but I think fans of the 1977's version would be very happy about that. And in the background we've got Shores great "Goblin Theme". What about that?

That's exactly how i'd want the reference to work. Kind of like the "a shortcut.. to mushrooms' or "riddles in the dark" in FOTR. Worked out really well for book fans to catch the nod, while movie goers who hadn't read the book didn't know any differently.

PJ has explicitly stated that this time he's going to try to fit in as many songs from the book as he can to his movies. We already got a taste of that in the first trailer.
Though I still doubt that this particular song will survive to the movie. It would feel silly for goblins to have more than one song, and "Fifteen birds in five fir trees" is a lot more important, plotwise. I'll be sorely dissappointed if that doesn't get sung, however.

and I think more songs is generally good (especially if done by Howard Shore).
I'd say that if the rights to that song can be secured, why not?
My only worry is like someone else said - don't cut the goblin song in the book for it.
But if they couldn't get the song from the book into the first movie because of the deadline looming or Howard Shore being unavailable, then I would say definitely make some kind of Goblin song in one of the other movies. The goblins should have a song.

But do they sing while quickly and roughly escorting prisoners down to their stronghold/for/base to be "judged" by their Captain/General/leader? Do they sing a song about the very act they're performing, what they'll be doing and where they are going? Do you they have a songbook full of songs for different scenarios like; "marching off to battle and certain death", "capturing a group of travelers in backdoor cave and escorting them to our home to be tortured", "15 persons being chased and climbing trees to escape"?
while I LOVE the songs in the book, I just don't think it would lend the necessary sense of fear if the goblins are singing "ho ho my lad... you go my lad".

I think this would work really well. I hope they can incoporate it like this. I think for all the flak PJ and Boyens get i do think they are good at inserting the dialogue from the books into the movies. Whether it will be by a goblin town goblin or by someone else is a different thing! (there habit of giving actors the lines from another character to say at different times to the book), may end up with down down to goblin town being said by Dwalin when in Rivendell, lol.

Since we already know that PJ is including the wonderfully evocative dwarf song in Bag End, what makes you so certain that the goblins will not sing/ chant?
It would be a wonderful counterpoint, in terms of substance and linguistic style, to the dwarf song.
And as has been stated a number of times, soldiers on the march do lots of singing.

It's supposed to be a terrifying song - pretty tricky as far as I can imagine. If they can't make it work, I'd much rather skip it than have it seem silly.
