Thrain or Bolg in first trailer? (creature design spoilers) Can't Post

Are we sure that the person Gandalf is fighting in the first trailer is Thrain? I thought so too, especially after going frame by frame and seeing that the attacker clearly has a beard and long hair...

But now, that picture of the Gandalf & Bolg action figure set has turned up and revealed that PJ's version of Bolg is rocking a giant beard and messy hair.

Thoughts?

Conan Stevens who plays Bolg is 7" tall, so definitely not him [In reply to] Can't Post

The person in the trailer is Mark Trotter stunt doubling as Thrain.

Welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

I like the idea that the beard isn't actually his...that he wears it like a "trophy" from some poor dwarf! Reminds me of the Predator and his human skulls Cool

Because the flipside to this is bad -Orcs can grow beards?????

I like this too.

Are there any tiny bits of evidence to back that idea up, or is this just something suggested as a possibility?

Orcs were certainly described by Tolkien as hairy [In reply to] Can't Post

At least, some were. So, why couldn't they grow beards?

Well sort of [In reply to] Can't Post

Earlier today, right here at TORn, some of us reasoned out that it is a trophy beard. See this thread: http://newboards.theonering.net/...orum_view_collapsed;

Welcom to TORn NamelessThing [In reply to] Can't Post

The unknown person that is fighting Gandalf in trailer 1 isn't Bolg. Bolg is taller than Gandalf.

Sure [In reply to] Can't Post

But Tolkien also described hobbits as beardless. He never said orcs can't grow them.

In any event, I think Bolg's beard is a dwarf trophy (like a scalp, but of something more important than a dwarf's hair). Nice touch.

He didn't say they could, either. [In reply to] Can't Post

Since Orcs are essentially corrupted Elves, which don't grow beards, they probably wouldn't grow beards unless they were just that old, like around Cirdan's age.

Then again, I do recall seeing a bearded Orc in ROTK, just before the Riders of Rohan charge into the army of Uruks outside Minas Tirith, and another (pale grey-looking) Uruk before that, standing a few feet behind Gothmog during the Siege of Gondor, with white hair and what looked like very big muttonchops. Though, they were probably half-Orcs, like the ruffians of Isengard.

Tolkien never settled the nature of orcs [In reply to] Can't Post

It was never settled, within Tolkien's writings (and, supposedly, within his mind) that the orcs were indeed corrupted elves. There were some spiritual problems with that scenario that Tolkien had great difficulty with.

Corrupted beasts was another explanation Tolkien ran with from time to time, but again, that wasn't set in stone either.

In any event, we just don't know exactly where orcs came from.

In that context, a little hair on the chin is not a problem for me.

I have never been convinced. . . [In reply to] Can't Post

. . .that Gandalf is fighting Thrain in the teaser trailer.
In the screenshot below, Gandalf appears to be fighting toe to toe with the creature/thing.
If he was fighting a dwarf, wouldn't he be towering over the dwarf in this shot?
