... we know (or think we know) that they've changed the ending and moved Mirkwood on to film two, but we don't have any idea what extra material might have been added to film one. It may not be as simple as just chopping the end off...

Seeing as we know around an hour's-worth of material has been moved to Desolation of Smaug, that surely leaves us with a 2 hour Unexpected Journey. No way was the original UJ gonna be more than 3 hours. The only way this is gonna be longer than 2 hours is if Peter basically gives us the EE now.

I feel that would be a true slap in the face. It would essentially mean that we are not getting Beorn, Mirkwood and Thranduil because the studio wants shorter movies. I was under the impression that the three-film decision was predicated on the fact that they had too much material, and couldn't fit it all into two films.

And think that both purposes will be met. The studio will make more money and PJ will get to tell the story he wants to tell.

They had to much material to fit into two movies, so they cut the material into three and then had some space to fill in some extra material! Given the EE's there will be around 11 hours The Hobbit... It's plenty! :D

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

But I still think, with whatever they add to the film that this will be quite a bit shorter than the LOTR films. I'll just say that I hope you all prove me wrong and the actual running time is around three hours!

They had me fooled there for a bit, I thought that was pretty underwhelming for a dragon who's supposed to be the dragon to end all dragons.
There was a man. There was a lady. There was a Dragon Lord.

I just had a look at the cinema in my country (Czech republic) and it says 135 min. Take a look here. Scroll down, click on Pripravujeme (the very right orange tab), then click on the Hobbit poster. There it says Delka (min.): 135. And there is another page saying the same thing. Anyway, I suppose they just generated some number :)

While the last scene from the book that we saw in the revised scroll was the rescue from the treetops, it was followed by a shot of Erebor and an absolutely generic shot of Gandalf and Thorin that clearly was neither part of the rescue scene nor any scene that might have followed it immediately. In other words, when that scroll was assembled, PJ knew that he was going at least as far as the rescue, but wasn't sure how much further he was going. The generic nature of the end of the scroll was a signal that the film might well go on past that point. My guess is that it either ends there or, considerably more likely, as they are about to enter Mirkwood. And if PJ hasn't decided that yet, of course no one knows what the running time will be, even roughly.

How so, since the production decided to excise Beorn from the scroll, the film synopsis and the cast list? The most likely scenario is that it ends before Beorn.

...but the other two films could still be another 3 hours each? It could simply case of the best way to split 8 hours into 3 (since they wouldn't do a pair of 4 hour movies!) Just a thought, the first film being 2 hours long (and of course that is just a rumour) need not be so dispiriting...

The revision to the synopsis would be based on the same principle: mention what we know will be in the movie, omit any reference to the part that may or may not be. There's no problem with including something not mentioned in the synopsis, but the opposite would be, so you err on the safe side.
