I think our family friendly code is getting stretched a bit

I think our family friendly code is getting stretched a bit Can't Post

I actually swear. But I appreciate judicious use of swear words and the fact that we don't encourage them here. And when swear words are in the subject line, everytime I visit that board I *see* it. It's kind of relentless. A word spoken is heard once as an accent on a moment. A word written is *heard* over and over and over again.

With the second swear word cropping up in a subject line in the Hobbit board, I guess I see a loosening of the guidelines occurring and worry it will become more frequent.

And for the record, I consider WTF to be swearing. I don't care if you didn't say it. I *hear* it when I read that acronym. I'm not sure I saw that in the subject line recently but I read it recently.

We're trying to stay on top of the situation [In reply to] Can't Post

but as you can imagine, it's hard to catch everything. We've had more than 1,000 posts in the last 24 hours with the release of the trailer, dozens of new members, plus the message boards have been difficult to access, so we might not get to things as quickly as we usually do. We are not loosening our standards, but we are maybe not catching everything as quickly as one would want.

I edited out a word in one of the subject lines, but there is a wide range of "acceptable" language with the different cultures represented here.

I didn't mean to imply the admins were loosening their standards [In reply to] Can't Post

I meant to say that we, the users, are pushing the boundaries. The user in question (someone around long enough to know our family friendly code) posted two posts with what I would consider a swear word in the subject lines of two different posts. I worried that this was becoming a comfortable means of expression with that person and would be adopted by other people.

But I hate calling people out so I just phrased it such that admins would take a look. Thanks for doing that.

I don't know, in what culture, either of those words, used in the context they were used, are anything other than cursing. There are levels of cursing, for sure. But I think neither were really necessary to make the point and would be considered cursing even by people who curse. (And I curse) And as I said before, I just ignore it in the body of text and the subject lines of posts that are other than the Initial/Original post. I just cringe to see it in the subject lines of original posts. I even ignored the first instance. It was the second that made me bring it.
