A taste of cinematic Middle-earth: official recipies Can't Post

Warner Bros. has released a new site specializing in the tastes of Middle-earth. Featuring such categories as sweets & treats, main courses and breakfast foods, it also provides a way for users to submit recipies as well. Steven Hunter's Bombur is featured as the face of Middle-earth culinary delights and his cookbook is a linked tab as well. That may even be a clue into the character but more than that, it is a sign that WB wants to have a little fun with its December tentpole movie.
The official description says:
Recipes From Middle-earth
Fellow travelers, we welcome you to sample this collection of recipes for authentic Middle-earth cuisine cultivated by the Dwarf Company's heartiest appetite. Give each dish a rating, and submit your own recipes for others to enjoy and appraise too!

Well we do talk about food around here quite a bit [In reply to] Can't Post

in fact there's a food poll in progress right now on Pollantir: http://newboards.theonering.net/...b=post_time;so=DESC;

And some may even remember the great (though sadly short lived) Middle-earth Recipe Threads: [See this entry at TORn's Mathom House] and [Middle-earth Recipes Collected Links] (Thanks again Magpie!)

It's good they are having some fun with this. (Hate the word "official" though.)

One of the recipes is by "Meryl" [In reply to] Can't Post

Wonder who that is?

And in this setting, Bombur reminds me of Mario Batali!

When we'd go on multi-day canoe trips... [In reply to] Can't Post

...we'd drag the cheese and wine in the water behind the boat to keep it cold. The cheese was, of course, in a water proof bag.

Root cellars also kept things cool before refrigeration.

Your recipe becomes Warners property, right? [In reply to] Can't Post

Just so we're all clear on this, this is the release you agree to if you send in a recipe.

http://apps.warnerbros.com/thehobbit/recipes/us/

and go to "Submit a Recipe"

"I acknowledge and agree that my submission: (i) is wholly original with me and does not infringe or violate the rights of any third party; (ii) is suitable for viewing by the general public; (iii) does nnot contain any lewd, obscene or pornographic content; and (iv) is subject to the Warner Bros. Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

(sounds reasonable and child-friendly, but here's the relevant bit)

I hereby grant Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. and its licensees and assignees, the perpetual, non-exclusive, irrevocable, worldwide right and license to display, distribute, edit, and exploit my submission (including my name and likeness) in al media, now known or hereafter devised, by whatever means, without any compensation to me."

Somebody who has more legal knowledge: what do they mean by "non-exclusive" when the rest of it sounds like they own it? I sounds to me like we should save our super duper choco recipes for someone who will pay us for using it - and let us keep the rights to do whatever we want with it.

Cups in Middle-earth? [In reply to] Can't Post

I notice the recipes (or at least the handful I've looked at) use 'cups' as a measure.

I don't know how widely the cups-in-recipes thing is outside the US (it's typically not used here in the UK), but it does jar somewhat[1] to see Americanisms creep into Middle-earth.

The trouble with Americanisms is that people from the US tend not to notice when they're being used in a non-New World context! Wink

[1] Which is appropriate, I suppose, if there are any recipes for preserves (ho-ho).

Yes, and a listed recipe for "biscuits" is definitely a N. Americanism [In reply to] Can't Post

which would be the equivalent to scones in the UK and NZ.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biscuit

An interesting - and jarring - phenomenon for an American now used to having New Zealand "bickies" with her cup of tea. Shocked. And I'll take some "jam" with my scone, cheers. (very very confusing this) Tongue

'Cups' is used in NZ as well. [In reply to] Can't Post

How do you measure out quantities of flour (for instance)?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Great idea! [In reply to] Can't Post

I made a treacle tart from the Harry Potter stories, and it went over very well with some and fell flat with others. Personally... I really liked it!

I think I'd like to try the Pigeon Pie... but substitute it with beef or chicken. It sounds like a Shepherd's pie... which I love!

AND I think I'll try the Vanishing Cobbler. *mouth starts watering* Uh-oh... i'm in trouble now.

Great threads to read through! [In reply to] Can't Post

I happen to be having an early birthday celebration on the 22nd September (I had actually forgotten why this date is so auspicious - it was just the only day I had free) where my friends are coming to help me get my garden into shape, and I will be serving tea and food - turns out it's a perfect occasion considering the date!

These threads and the 'official' site are great inspiration! So far I'm going to serve pesto pinwheels, mushroom and tomato tarts, scones, tea (iced and hot), fresh fruit & vege juice, and polenta cupcakes.

Never heard of the stone. [In reply to] Can't Post

In my corner of the world, cups and all are used most of the time, until you start cooking for some odd hundreds of people. Then it switches. No one wants to sit there eyeing up things by that large of an amount. Instead we rely on the machine to tell us by weight when it is the right amount.
