Movie Music Trivia Game #2
|
Can't Post
|
|
...although, this isn't a music game this week. There's lots to hear when watching the movies besides music. This week, I concentrated on the sounds associated with the Ring. I have prepared 10 soundfiles, some only a few seconds long, that feature a sound (or series of sounds) associated with the One Ring. (This would have been a good debut quiz for the new forums here at TheOneRing... if I had thought of it then.) Your task will be to identify what scene or action is happening. In each case, you should be able to specifiy your description to include the Ring. I suspect this may be very hard. I will give some clues and will not consider it a loss in points if you read them. I'm thinking that, even if you can't identify many, it will still be an intriguing endeavor to listen to these sounds more closely than you may have before. But I only know you're participating if you post, so lurkers show yourself and give me a clue that you're out there. Movie Music Mini-Magpie Mathoms go out to all participants. To get started, visit THIS PAGE to find the links. Clues: The first, is obvious... all clips are associated with The One Ring... the Ring... not the website. The rest of the clues are in hidden text below.
- The soundclips are: numbered by order they appear in the movie. #1 is heard first... and #10 last.
- The movies the soundclips are from:
- FOTR: clips 1 - 5
- TTT: clips 6 - 8
- ROTK: clips 9 - 10
- Places associated with each clip.
- Bag End
- Bag End
- Rivendell
- Lothlorien
- Amon Hen
- Dead Marshes
- Henneth Annun
- Osgiliath
- Crack of Doom
- Crack of Doom
Answers will be posted Friday... if I can. Over the weekend if not Friday. Remember: humorous replies and discussion of sound clips counts as participation!

and hard! 1. The ring thumping on the floor from Bilbo's hand 2. Gandalf's attempt to touch it 3. The ring listening in on Gandalf's and Frodo's conversation 4. The ring getting all hot and bothered in the fireplace 5. Frodo fleeing from the fire into the frying pan as he escapes the clutches of Boromir to run into a near showdown at the seat of seeing on Amon Heth 6. Frodo playing with his ring finger at night in the dead marshes 7. Faramir under the ring's spell 8. Frodo-Nazgul face off 9. The ring taking over Frodo's will at the edge of Doom. thump thump. 10. The ring landing on the lava as gollum goes fitz.

I'm just glad you didn't ask us what sounds the Foley guys used to make all of those sounds... I found this very eerie to listen to -- they did a good job of coming up with things that sound "evil". I only peeked at your clues for what films these are for -- hope I'm somewhere close to right: 1. Bilbo dropping the ring as he leaves Bag End -- "thud" 2. Gandalf going to pick up the ring -- "hiss" 3. Frodo putting ring on the table at the Council of Elrond -- "stare" 4. Boromir picking it up in the snow -- "clink" 5. Either the Bree or Amon Hen scene -- someplace where Frodo goes into the Wraith world 6, That scene with Frodo and Gollum in the Dead Marshes? 7. The temptation of Faramir in the cave? 8. Frodo almost giving it to that Nazgul in Osgiliath -- "flap, flap" 9. Frodo at Mt. Doom, right before he claims the ring 10. Destruction of the ring in the lava pit This was REALLY interesting -- thanks for a great challenge! BTW, how long does it take you to do all those clips like that? It would take me...years.

These are very intriguing. I didn't look at the hints, but I assumed the clips were in chronological order, and I came up with these answers: 1. Bilbo dropping the Ring 2. Gandalf trying to pick it up 3. At the Council of Elrond, when Frodo sets it down 4. Maybe another Council moment - perhaps when Gimli hits it? 5. Frodo with the Ring on at Amon Hen 6. Nazgul overflight in Dead Marshes 7. "They're here. They've come." (Osgiliath) 8. On rampart facing Nazgul in Osgiliath 9. Holding the Ring over the lava 10. The Ring hitting the lava 6, 7 and 8 were all creepy 'temptation' moments that I tried to distinguish by listening to the variations in the different ways the beating element was done. Sometimes it seems more like wings, sometimes like the beating of a heart. At one point I thought one of these was in the Tower of Cirith Ungol as Sam holds the Ring out to Frodo. That has a very strong heartbeat sound, I know, but without listening I can't recall if it also has that creepy vocalization too. Having these moments isolated like this, so as to be able to compare and contrast them, is fascinating. Thanks once again, Magpie!
...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost.

I thought I'd finally delurk and let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate your posts on music too. I have to admit, I did look at your clues. 1.Bilbo dropping the Ring in the doorway at Bagend. 2.Gandalf reaching for the Ring on the floor after Bilbo left. 3.Frodo placing the Ring on the pedestal at the Council of Elrond? 4.Frodo looking in the Mirror of Galadriel and getting flung onto the ground. 5.Boromir calling for Frodo after he tried to take the Ring. Frodo has the Ring on and goes to the Seeing Chair, sees the Eye and falls. 6.Frodo stroking the Ring in the Dead Marshes. 7.Faramir being tempted to take the Ring from Frodo at Henneth Annun. 8.Frodo holding up the Ring to the "Wraith on Wings" at Osgiliath. 9.Frodo dangling the Ring over the lava at Mt. Doom. 10.Gollum falling into the lava---SPLAT! Thanks!

1. Whew! The first one, thankfully, was easy. It is the Ring as it is dropped in the doorway of Bag End by Bilbo on his way out. Love the "weight" of it. 2. Okay. This one was a little tougher. I think it's the sound from when Gandalf reached down to *almost* touch the Ring, saw the Eye briefly, and pulled back. 3. I'm going to guess that this is from the Council of Elrond when the Ring is out in the open and its fate is being discussed (a rather heated discussion, at that!). 4. I actually took a peek at the clue for this one. I just had no idea. I'm still not sure, but I'm going to take a guess that it's from when Frodo was looking into Galadriel's mirror. 5. This is from when Frodo escapes Boromir...right after Boromir falls and becomes himself again. The clip continues all the way through Frodo's "escape" to Amon Hen. 6. This is my second peek. I still don't know. It doesn't seem like it would be from when the Nazgul is overhead...it's not powerful enough. I'll guess that it's from when Frodo was looking at the faces in the Dead Marshes before he fell in. At first I thought that it might be from when he is lying there stroking the Ring, but I think that would have been a shorter clip. 7. Ack. This one is really tough. I'm going to take a stab at it and guess that it is from when Frodo was confronted by Faramir at sword-point. That's a true guess, but nothing ventured nothing gained, right? 8. I'm pretty sure this is Frodo facing the WiKi at Osgiliath. My first thought was that it is from when Frodo first sensed the Nazgul coming, but there were lots of other sounds then, and I'm not sure you could have isolated this quite so much. I know it's one of these two moments, just going on instinct that it's the first one I mentioned. 9. The similarity to a heartbeat is so disconcerting, don't you think? It gives me shivers. It is a wonderful way to help convey the all-consuming power of the Ring that is so evident in the books. Brilliantly done, imho. Anyway, this sounds like when Frodo was on the brink, now completely over taken. 10. I think the splat must be Gollum and the Ring as they fall into the Cracks of Doom. It's the least terrifying and least dignified sound assiciated with the Ring so far, which is kind of fitting as it is about to finally be destroyed. It's so funny how when I hear these clips they are so familiar and yet it is still so challenging to pinpoint the moment they occurred. I can honestly say that I "recognized" every one of them somewhere in my consciousness. I think they are truly brilliant sound effects. Thank you so much, Magpie. This was really challenging and fun!

Honestly Magpie, you could make a bit more of an effort to keep up - it's not like you're busy with anything else, like putting together music quizzes or anything... ;-)
