Any audiophiles help with LOTR's surround sound options? Can't Post

The Extended Editions give a choice of 5.1 DD EX, Stereo Surround Sound and 6.1 DTS ES.

I have a 5.1 Blu-ray player (a Samsung HT-C5500).

So which setting should I choose?

It depends on your decoding capabilities... [In reply to] Can't Post

Basically the quality is:

DTS > DD 5.1 > Dolby Surround

So if you have a DTS decoder, you should choose this option.

So surely I'm missing sound from one speaker if I choose this?

As long as your receiver decodes it. [In reply to] Can't Post

DTS is a 5.1 format. You should be fine.

Cool thankyou both. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm good with TVs and blu-ray players and stuff, but when it comes to audio fuggedaboutit. My setup is terribly calibrated, the music or sound effects often drown out dialogue. I have to keep moving the center speaker's volume up and down depending on what movie I'm watching Crazy

Samsung HT-C5500 [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry to barge in, I do not mean to be off topic.

Do you like your Samsung HT?

I purchased a Samsung HT-BD1250 when I got my Samsung 55' TV in 2009 and I'm very disappointing about it. It keep freezing on almost every blu-ray I play on it. Samsung is willing to fix it but it will cost $150. I would like to replace it with another Samsung HT but not sure what.
If you could give me your opinion on it I will appreciate it.

Thanks.
Thierry

I've not had any problems like that... [In reply to] Can't Post

The bass is way too powerful, the internet tells me I should put a sock in to absorb the bass? Like I said, I have trouble calibrating audio, but that's my fault not the hardware's. Although, the auto calibration setting is awful.

It was the only blu-ray player I could find with a HDMI input, which I use for my PS3 and when calibrated correctly it's amazing (especially considering price) really high quality and powerful speakers. I'd recommend it for sure. Smile

PS3 has DTS decoding capabilities. And you should be able to adjust the bass on your surround system, either in the settings or there will be a small dial on the back of the woofer.

IMO always choose the DTS option if available, the decoder will set it to 5.1 even if the track on the blu-ray is 6 or 7.1.
