New 2012 copy of the Hobbit (hardcover) Can't Post

Have there been any pre-release reviews or descriptions of the new hardcover?(ISBN-10: 0547953836)

Wondering if I should wait for this copy or track down a 70th Anniversary hardback.

Why limit yourself to one? ;) [In reply to] Can't Post

I have several copies of The Hobbit. The Annotated Hobbit, the illustrated Hobbit, a paperback copy and at least two hardbacks. More is better!Cool

I say get both. I'm extremely tempted by this new copy.

You do that too? That is awesome. I have two paperback copies of the one-volume editions of LOTR as well as two hardcover copies, and I'm planning on getting the new paperback releases of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings this September, even though I own the Alan Lee covers. I also have the 70th hardcover copy of the Hobbit, as well as the paperback edition. I've always said to myself if you really love a book, and it's really good, have more than one copy. I also have two editions of Sherlock Holmes and Dracula. I'm so glad I'm not alone! Smile

Not just either of you . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

I have 3 copies of the Lord of the Rings, including 1 single volume.

3 Hobbits, too . . . an old paperback from the 70's with some odd cover art, a copy from a four-volume paperback set (Hobbit, FOTR, TTT, ROTK) and the 50th Aniversary Edition hardback.

looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"

first copy [In reply to] Can't Post

It's my first copy(and read)Blush I generally read kindle books but felt that this book needed to be physical for the maps and art.

I ended up ordering this one from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Not sure how it differs from from the new Houghton Mifflin Books or this HarperCollins 70th.

It looks a lot like the HarperCollins 70th but it's a different publisher? Confusing.

You must have more than one ;) [In reply to] Can't Post

*high five*

I also have several copies/editions/languages of both LotR and The Hobbit. However, my
my first original sets are the ones I read from exclusively. They've been mouse-chewed, ripped, tear-stained, highlighted direct quotes used in the films, notes in the margins, fav parts underlined, with each signed by various hobbits, and other Tolkien/film-related folks.

Yeah... multiple copies are a good thing :)

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

I've just figured out I have four copies . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

1) A copy from the 70's with an odd cover . . . bought used . . . in a box somewhere.
2) A copy from late 70's with Tolkien art on the cover . . . bought used . . . also, in a box somewhere
3) A copy from sometime in the 80's with alan lee art . . . bought new, part of a four pack along with FOTR, TTT, ROTK . . . on my desk
4) A hardback, 50th anniversary eddition in the sleeve . . . gift from Mom . . . very nice!

I'd forgotten about the 2nd copy, but I was looking on the interweb for a Ballantine version of the Hobbit, saw the cover and remember that for years that was my primary reader. Gotta find that one so I can read it alongside my Houghton Mifflin copy and look for differences.

I am SUCH a Tolkien geek! Evil

um.. [In reply to] Can't Post

.. I'm a collector - I'm not sure how many copies of TH and LotR there may be in the geordie library, but at best guess, it's around six or seven dozen copies of each. And what with most of LotR being 3-volume sets; that's a lot of books!

I sometimes think about getting treatment for my ... obsession ... but then I think, nah...

1966, for the 50th? I think you mean 1986? Wink

(I knew you'd been collecting them wherever you could find them, but this is outstanding! Cool)

Not me - [In reply to] Can't Post

- but then I have my own copy; it's in better condition than this one (and cost a lot less, back in the day).

One thing - the entry reads:

"It comes bound in its original green cloth boards with black titles "

-
which is inaccurate; the titles, authors name and decorations (designed by Tolkien) are actually stamped in dark blue.
