Acknowledged and gladly complied with. The discussion has become an argument between two people with personal insults creeping in. If you both must continue with this topic, please do so via private message. "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

- many years ago. IIRC he said he read the book once, on a long railway journey. Being a collector, I have a copy of that paperback ed. myself. It does have at least part of one of the Appendices - The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, from Appendix A. Which leads me to wonder whether that is what pJ may have meant when he recently said that the Appendices were added to later editions of RotK. I wonder if he meant 'later than my copy'. What with my bein' a collector and all that, I can tell pJ that the Appendices - all of them - were included in the 1st edition, published in October 1955.

I kind of liked the Rankin/Bass version of TH. It wasn't great, but it had a lot of charm for what it was: a TV special aimed at children, and I loved the song "The Greatest Adventure". There were a lot of not-so-good parts, but I really liked Bilbo, and I loved his saying ""Bless my buttons!" (For the longest time I thought that phrase was somewhere in one of the books as well-- it just sounded so very Bilbo-ish. But then I went looking for it and couldn't find it and realized it wasn't canon. *sigh* I still think Bilbo might have said it sometime when JRRT wasn't listening...)

Neither of us ever suggested it was the biggest thing in movies since Gone With The Wind. Oh golly, I hope not. The Wizard of Oz was robbed in 1939. (When my mother made me watch GWTW as a teenager, and then asked me how I liked it, I guess she thought I'd love it. She got very offended when I told her that I couldn't stand Scarlett O'Hara, and wondered why anyone would think someone so selfish was special. You'd think that would be a hint to her that we didn't share the same taste in movies. Years later she forced me to watch The Titanic. At least it had good music...)
