Thanks for this! [In reply to] Can't Post

Lots of interesting stuff in this translation. Strange to think of Radagast as being short though, and that Beorn is the last of his kind.

Fantastic work. Thank you very much indeed. [In reply to] Can't Post

A couple of interesting lines which have lingered in both translations.

That Galadriel "secretly" supports Gandalf - one assumes in defiance of the decision of the WC overall?

The naming of Fimbul is a nice nod to the Norse

That Legolas will seemingly feature in the background to Thranduil's march to BOFA

And that Saruman will not be leaving TH with his white untarnished.

Interestinger and interestinger!

The overall point is a personal response one [In reply to] Can't Post

but I think "bumping into one another" might be a little off the mark at this stage. It does seems that each of the characters would have legitimate or logical reasons to be where they are encountered (Galadriel at the WC, Legolas in Mirkwood etc). It's not quite as if Gandalf keeps running into people at the supermarket checkout.

Gollum's travels [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
Gollum...rightly concludes: The hobbit Bilbo Baggins of the Shire has stolen it. So begins the hunt over mountains and through deserts, take years and cost many lives, until this miserable creature, finally, the fate of Middle-earth holds in his hand.

(emphasis mine)

So will we see this in the films, or do you think this was just written for the action figure to tell more of Gollum's story that won't actually be shown in the Hobbit?

Maybe there's something in the appendices I'm forgetting [In reply to] Can't Post

But it's pretty clear in The Hobbit that the orc/goblin villains, Smaug, and the Necromanacer are separate from each other and don't work together. Even in the Quest for Erebor, Gandalf only says that he was afraid that Smaug and Sauron might become allies - there's no indication they actually did or even communicated. Middle-earth is a big world and not everyone has to be connected. It's like making Butterbur an undercover agent for Gondor.

So all of this can still work out. The dwarves believe he is dead.

The books make it clear that he's dead [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not a purist, but I can't see any point in having Azog survive the battle or (more likely) an undead Azog. They're already making up a Nazgul storyline to give the Necromancer something to "necromance" - isn't that enough?

Legolas AND Thandruil [In reply to] Can't Post

Thranduil
The mighty Elf-lord and legendary warrior Legolas Thranduil's father. As king, he rules over forest land to the north of a large forest area, once known as the Green Forest and now bears the ominous name of Mirkwood. During the long years of darkness Thranduil has increasingly isolated from the outside world - he cares only about his own people. An ancient, bitter feud has discharged meant that he basically rejects all dwarves - and especially a certain dwarf, namely Thorin Oakenshield.

Legolas
Legolas is the Prince of the forest land and a high empire same as his father Thranduil. However, you meet him often at the royal court - much rather he patrols the area with the forest guards of the same troops. The large narrow-savvy fighter is his father and his people, resulting in unconditional loyalty. But the events of the outside world behind now and in the isolated world of forest elves left their mark. Because he sees the disaster coming, Legolas faces the choice of either his father or his conscience to follow.

this sort of gives an insight into legolas and thandruil's relationship and also their story arc.

Well it's a bit obvious one he chooses, since he is hostile to Gimli in The Lord of the Rings.

I don't think his choice... [In reply to] Can't Post

...will have anything to do with his feelings towards the dwarves. Rather, I think it will be more akin to whether or not he will isolate himself in Mirkwood, as his father, or acknowledge the rest of Middle-Earth and the troubles it will face.

Hmmmmmm . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Makes sense. Most of Tolkein's names have a source in Anglo-Saxon or Norse. Just try googling Gimli Laugh
Though I try looking for Grinnah . . . very little . . . Grinnah Stones in England are a climbing area.

As I see it, Grinnah and Fimbul seem to be the anomalies. Has anyone seen them on an official list of 'characters' for PJ and the Hobbit?

And I must follow, if I can,

looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"
