Wink

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,

"Thorin sat up with a start. 'Something is not right,' he muttered to himself as he stood up and
looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"

I do not [In reply to] Can't Post

but there have been many threads here over the years by people who do hear the same voice and have been distracted, confused, or annoyed by it.

I did spend the entirety of Hellboy 2 trying to figure out if they'd changed Abe's voice or if I was hearing things.

I guess I'm just not a fan of absolute statements Cool

Fair enough :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

When I listen to Treebeard, I hear JRD and not Gimli. Which isn't such a problem ... as I'm hearing the actor rather than another character. And I'd hope that Smaug/Necromancer is the same.

The difference here [In reply to] Can't Post

Is that JRD is a voice-over artist and BC is an actor, these are two different disciplines - this is why most animated films with "big-names" in aren't very good - But, who knows, he might have Robin Williams' multi-talented abilities.

New Necromancer Voice Actor [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope this is up-to-date information. The fact that they at one time had the same guy voicing both characters had me worried that the Necromancer was going to possess Smaug or something equally silly.

Perhaps this is being misinterpreted? [In reply to] Can't Post

Could it be that the "Voice of the Necromancer" is actually a character unto itself? A Dol Guldur equivalent to the Mouth of Sauron?

Snark if you must. If somebody had posited an evil lighthouse back in 1999, I'm sure it would have been hilarious, as well Tongue

I haven't seen RotK since its theatrical release. Was the Mouth depicted as a literal embodiment of Sauron's voice?

The down side of casting by popularity [In reply to] Can't Post

Would Cumberbatch have been considered for any role if Morgan Freeman was not cast?

So either this goes down to "it seemed like a good idea at the time, but..."

OR

With the expanded timeline, Cumberbatch wasn't able to cover both jobs, or perhaps no additional fee was offered;

OR

With the expanded timeline, they no longer need to double up.

Bottom line is likely one or both of the roles he was previously assigned to have been substantially expanded. If TH2 is all about Smaug this makes sense. Necro's role (in TH3?) might be larger now too, regardless of whether it makes sense or not.

Morgan Freeman? [In reply to] Can't Post

And I'm not sure I'm following your logic here. If Freeman hadn't been cast, Cumberbatch would not have been considered? Why? Because they happen to star in one television series together? Cumberbatch is just as capable an actor as Freeman and has just as many credits to his name.

I think it's likely that they had always intended for someone else to voice the Necromancer, to be honest. They did this in the trilogy, and as I've said it is a common practice - think of Darth Vader, etc.

Thesr rumors are not new... [In reply to] Can't Post

Craig Hall as Galion has especially been around for a while. I will continue to consider these to be rumors until they are confirmed through 3 Foot 7, an official studio press release and/or Peter Jackson.

It's no secret how PJ came to notice Cumberbatch... [In reply to] Can't Post

Besides, I never said he wasn't right for the part, how could I know that without seeing the movie?

Do you think that somehow it is a slight on Cumberbatch that they had slated him for two parts (one major one minor) but then realized they would like someone else for the possibly expanded minor part? There have been other changes to casting since filming began. Regardless I provided 3 scenarios, two of which had nothing to do with questioning Cumberbatch's suitability for the part of the Necromancer.

And yes MORGAN 'FRICKEN FREEMAN.

Fair enough [In reply to] Can't Post

But Sherlock has raised Cumberbatch's profile as much as it has Freeman's (if not arguably even more), so it's possible that PJ would have cast him even if Freeman himself hadn't been given the role of Bilbo. After all, Cumberbatch has recently worked with directors like Spielberg (who PJ knows fairly well, having collaborated with him on TINTIN) and is the main villain of the new Star Trek film.

So that scenario doesn't seem quite as likely, IMO.

Casting for apparent chemistry is on the rise. But perhaps it is just in this age of access to minutia it only seems it is on the rise. The association game has likely been in play for eons.

It has also been confirmed that Cumberbatch is at least voice-performing The Necromancer. So what do we make of the announced casting of Nathanial Lees? Do we have a 'Darth Vader' situation here?

Hmmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

Not going to let go, quite yet.

I honestly couldn't remember the Mouth in RotK, which now makes sense given kzer_za's insight that he was only in the EE (which I've never seen.) I also had no idea that Bruce Spence had played the role.

So I did some googling and found this interesting: Apparently (although I haven't actually spotted it in pics) they inscribed the helmet of the costume with the Sindarin "lammen gorthaur," which is, literally "Voice of the Necromancer."

Well, literally, gorthaur is something like "horrible abomination," however Gorthaur is the appellate given to Sauron as he existed at the time of the writing of TH, when he ruled at the Isle of Werewolves and then fled to Taur-nu-Fuin, and Gorthaur is likely the word Tolkien was rendering as "Necromancer.")

Could it be that this is, in fact, the same character and that Bruce Spence is not reprising the role?

Man is but an ass if he go about to expound this dream.
