I want to hear presenters at film awards* try to say 'Smaug'. Regardless, the only title that doesn't bother me much out of that list is Desolation of Smaug, just because I don't think I've ever seen the word Desolation in a title before, so, it's got points for standing out. * Yes, I know, big assumption. Just go with me for the purpose of humour.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. The idea had never crossed my mind. Bilbo the greedy evil Hobbit. Must have been the Ring at work.
Kangi Ska Resident Trickster & Wicked White Crebain Life is an adventure, not a contest. At night you can not tell if crows are black or white.

It may not be totally relevant to the story, but I think it's a title that stands-out.

Next summer? That's a hell of a gap between filming. Maybe they need that much time to do 48 FPS final renders of Smaug? Oh well. It better be worth it or they will have a worldwide riot on their hands.

Is how they are going to pull this off if Freeman is shooting Sherlock's third season that summer. Unless, of course, Bilbo is not called for in this block of shooting.

I'm assuming that these titles are just "in addition" to There and Back Again, which...

is probably still planned to be the final title, with one of the newly registered titles being for the middle film. Dang, now it'll be 2014 before I see all of The Hobbit.

Will shoot from January 2013 to March/April 2013 according to both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Both would be free for a Summer filming if they don't have any other contracts signed already. So there would be no problem to have Bilbo and Smaug back

pulpfiction16: One of the most cliched notions of chapter titling or subtitling always has something to do with clouds, storms or gathering. It's way too obvious "The Gathering Shadow", "The Gathering Clouds" "The Gathering Evil" "The Dark Storm". I think Robert Jordan's last book (post-humous) has a subtitle like "Gathering Clouds". No thank you! It's about as irksome as the use of "Rise of .." in a title. Regardless, the only title that doesn't bother me much out of that list is Desolation of Smaug, just because I don't think I've ever seen the word Desolation in a title before, so, it's got points for standing out. I always found the actual name of the battle "Battle of the Five Armies" to be distinctly cheesy, even if it's in Tolkien's work. Anything other than that, please. I can't believe you left out The Gathering Storm, the first volume of Sir Winston Churchill's The Second World War, and a number of other things including films, fantasy books, and computer games.

Elessar: First Movie: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Second Movie: The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Third Movie: The Hobbit: There and Back Again I like this set best. It retains the original two titles as the first and last movies, just as before. The Desolation Of Smaug is great as the filler because that's where the fate of Smaug should be told. 'Desolation' is a good, strong, dramatic word. And Smaug is the primary endpoint of the company (until it results in the battle) and so his name belongs in the title. Finally it's a chapter title, and a good, descriptive one to end movie number 2.

... unlike "An Unexpected Journey" and "There And Back Again", which actually sounded like film titles because they weren't about a specific event in the book, but had an overarching meaning. I really hope they can come up with film titles that aren't just chapter titles. Ugh!

Some could think it's cheesy or whatever but I wouldn't mind if this took over There and Back Again for film3, I think Bilbo deciding what to name his book with Frodo is enough to have "there and back again" referenced in the movies, or it could even just be left as it is in LOTR
