I didn't have any trouble suspending belief that Stalin did not exist in Andrew Upton's adaptation, which you could almost think of as an alternative history. He completely disregarded any molecule of grim Soviet era influence and just focused on a 40's era styling, i.e., clothing and music, to set the tone. It gave Ms. Blanchett a great excuse to swan about in a slinky dressing gown and oh, so well-fitted dresses with her hair in a stylish chignon. Oh, and the men's suits and such reflected the time, too. Astrov's vehicle of choice was apparently a motorcycle (heard off stage).
