Helm's Deep - Impossible Either Vision.... [In reply to] Can't Post

To me, Helm's Deep is impossible to figure out in the book or on screen.
I admit to not being a 'visual' person in my mind, but even in the movie, I can't quite figure out where's the Deep, the Deeping Coomb, Helm's Gate, The Hornburg, etc. Very confusing still.

Add to the fact that PJ makes it a battle of "300 against 10,000" and it's far beyond the usually granted Hollywood suspension of belief that one needs to take into movies these last 30 years where gunfights go on for 10 minutes while the hero is untouched by professional soldiers while picking them off at a shot per second the first time he picks up a blaster, er, I mean a gun. Wink

The Battle of the Pellannor Fields, on the other hand, especially coming after the stage has been set by the dark Siege of Gondor, is just spectacular on both book & screen. I know people with their 'scrubbing bubbles', but I understoold PJ's need to move the King of the Dead to this battle as it would not have worked in a flashback.
The charge of the Rohirrim & the Mumakil scene, plus the Lord of the Nazgul vs. Eowyn were all great, so what more could you want - I know, Gandalf vs.The Witch-king at the Gate & the right way like the book, but I understood PJ was trying to make Witchy-poo look invincible then. Too bad PJ had already blown Eowyn's cover by then........

A much more dramatic scene would've been achieved if Merry had just said on the horse, "Don't I know you?" & then Eowyn says, "No living man am I!" & stabs the Witch-king in the head......

On the final battle scene before the Black Gate, it's just 'fluff' in the book, added for dramatic effect, but, of course, blown up in the movie.
The best thing in the movie is The Mouth of Sauron, although for the life of me, I still can't figure out why he doesn't say "I am the Mouth of Sauron" since special effects go out of the way to make his mouth twice the size as normal. Shocked

a vote for Treebeard-- [In reply to] Can't Post

Must admit that i've gained appreciation for it when i reread it but i feel like it drags and not much happens in this chapter. I guess i'm a hasty person. :P

Barrow Downs [In reply to] Can't Post

is the least favorite by far for me. Also;as much as Iove old Tom Bombadil; I just saw him and the whole Barrow Down chapters as more Hobbit type material. I did enjoy the refreshing change with Tom; but Barrow Downs I typically will skip over; I just get bored and for me I just saw it as fillerBlush Sorry, I hate to imply Tolkien was just trying to take up some space by inserting meaningless drivel, but I just couldn't picture the relevance of BD's and Tommy BSly I don't know what I'm trying to say other than I don't like them and thankfully the story flowed from then on imo.
