Shorter film lengths and no extended editions? Can't Post

From what I've read on the forums following the third film announcement, everyone appears to be assuming Jackson is going to add a whole load of extra content to the Hobbit and creating three epic, oversized films in which the plot is spread too thinly. However, it's just dawned on me that this isn't necessary the case.

If you consider the lengths of the extended editions of LOTR

FOTR - 210mins
TT - 225mins
ROTK - 263mins
(Average about 233mins)

And assume the Hobbit extended editions would have been the same, all Jackson really needs to do is split the 466 minutes (ish) of footages he's already shot over 3 films and he's already got three 2 hour 1/2 films. That's the same length as, for instance the last couple of Harry Potter films or the Hunger Games so is a length the average cinema audience is happy with.

(Obviously he'll need to shot a little bit of extra stuff to make the three films run smoothly, have beginnings middles and ends etc.)

Sorry if this seems obvious to other people but it hadn't really crossed my mind before and I was interested in what everyone else thought about it.

All the third film might really mean is we have to wait an extra year for the final two hours of the films we were meant to see in 2012/13, and we won't get extended editions. No extra filming of the history of the Dwarves or bridge film material.
