Remember the car in the background of FOTR? Can't Post

After extreme zooming in into the Academy DVD (which still has it), finally, it was possible to recognize what car this actually is:

Speaking of the car in FOTR... [In reply to] Can't Post

I never could see it. Was it just a big hoax/rumor?

Not to confuse your search even more [In reply to] Can't Post

the image TheHutt posted points to the wrong spot to look. An image with the car (or van, caravan?) can be seen here: http://www.theonering.com/...ship-new-line-cinema

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have heard about this car in that scene but never been able to find it (realize now that's because i have the dvd, haha) but thanks. I was beginning to think people had just made it up or got mixed up with the chimney.

For a long time I had always thought it was the smoke as well [In reply to] Can't Post

Some people really do have eagle eyes if they spotted that car on first viewing. I would have never noticed!

The car can be found on FOTR SEE [In reply to] Can't Post

The car was there in the theatrical run as well as on the Academy DVD (which of course none of us had...) :)

Right now, it can be spotted in the bonus materials of FOTR SEE, in the bonus feature "Music of Middle-Earth". There, the scene is unaltered.

The smoke you see in the background in fact does not belong to the car. The only thing which gives the car away is a fast-moving lightspot which is a reflection of sunlight on the car's windshield. This spot moves fast from the right to the left.

It's hard to spot on my screenshot but the arrow pointing to it is actually accurate for this frame. :)

PS: for those who didn't get the joke: the car below is from Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste", and is driven by Derek (played by PJ himself) in the film.

There is a dust plume - separate from the smoke - that moves [In reply to] Can't Post

There is a glint of light... and in another moment in that same scene - a dust plume that moves across the landscape.

You can check the link I provided in another post in this thread to see what I mean.

The smoke from the chimney does not move. That is, the point of origin does not move. The point of origin for the dust plume does move.

My thanks as well [In reply to] Can't Post

I heard about the car even when it was still in theatrical release. I strained my eyes every time I watched FOTR, and still couldn't see it. I did spot the smoke from the chimney and recognized it as such; I thought people had mistaken that for the car until I heard PJ admit that there was in fact a car which was removed from the DVD.

It was easier to see on the large screen [In reply to] Can't Post

7 of the 9 times I saw FOTR were over the summer of 2002 as matinee showings. I read about the car, looked for it, and found those two spots.

Finding it on the large screen made it was easier to spot on the small screen.

I hadn't heard PJ admit it. In the commentaries, he denies it.

I remember that car [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw it in the initial theatrical release several times and on a pirated copy taken from the academy version a few months later. Once the dvd came out I ditched my pirate copy and lo and behold, the car had vanished! Laugh
