Alterative Fellowship members Can't Post

This is supposed to be a fun game. The idea is to choose nine alternative Fellowship members to take the Ring to Mount Doom. You can choose any combination of characters from Middle-Earth (provided that they're good guys, of course).
My alternative Fellowship would be:
Bullroarer Took (Frodo)
Tom Bombadil (Sam)
Elrohir & Elladan (Merry & Pippin)
Radagast the Brown (Gandalf)
Elendil (Aragorn)
Gil-galad (Legolas)
Durin the Deathless (Gimli)
Hurin (Boromir)

Can I still have Gandalf as Gandalf ;-) [In reply to] Can't Post

Tom Bombadil (Frodo)
Luthien (Sam)
Bilbo & Galadriel (Merry & Pippin)
Gandalf (Gandalf)
Turgon (Aragorn)
Faramir (Legolas)
Balin (Gimli)
Beren (Boromir)

Now that is a list! Wink

Thats a good list [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, I admit that without Gandalf the Fellowship's chance of success would have been pretty poor indeed.

Gandalf wouldn't have to be Gandalf [In reply to] Can't Post

But I would still put him in the Fellowship. If only the Fellowship did actual consist of these characters. Could you imagine?!

It would be pretty cool but possibly ineffective [In reply to] Can't Post

Having Tom as Frodo is great because the Ring has no effect on him...but he also has interest in it and would probably lose it very quickly.
Of course the problem is that most of the useful members are either dead or doing their own thing by the time of the Third Age.
On second thoughts though, I may think of replacing Elendil for Beorn.
Just noticed that I spelt alternative wrong on the thread title...drat.Blush

His doomed to fail under the curse [In reply to] Can't Post

He would be a terrible choice for the quest. I would go so far as to give him a fake one ring, lol. And tell him he is so strong he can do it all by himself, then when he fails it doesnt matter and the real ring is much further and no one suspects a thing, mwhahaha! Tongue

Sticking with characters who could have been at the Council of Elrond [In reply to] Can't Post

" [The] Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil."

Okay, assuming that Gandalf had not escaped from Saruman, but that the Council of Elrond learned of the White Wizard's treachery from Radagast the Brown. Also assuming that Frodo Baggins did not sufficiently recover from his wound from the Morgal blade to bear the Ring to Mordor.

9. Elrohir
8. Elladan
8. Dat (invented character). Daughter of Dis and sister to Kili and Fili.
7. Halbarad, Dunadan Ranger
6. Faramir
5. Glorfindel
4. Radagast. Not a lot of Wizards to choose from.
3. Aragorn. I just can't come up with any justification to exclude him.
2. Rose Cotton. Someone sensible is needed. Rose is Sam's strength.
1. Samwise Gamgee as Ringbearer. Someone had to step up, after all.

Interesting choice regarding Sam [In reply to] Can't Post

Do you think Sam could've destroyed the Ring? Or is Rosie to Sam, as Sam is to Frodo?

Rosie as Sam's Samwise... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not sure that Sam could have brought himself to destroy the Ring either, but Rose Cotton's presence might have given him the fortitude after all.

Sounds like a reasonable fellowship [In reply to] Can't Post

Except I don't know how Radagast would have fared against a Balrog. Maybe this alternate Fellowship might have made it over Caradhras instead of going through the mines of Moria.

The group would have had to confront the Balrog on the far side of the bridge, I think... [In reply to] Can't Post

Radagast would have had to use purely defensive magics while the heroic powerhouses (Aragorn, Glorfindel, Faramir, Halbarad, Elladan and Elhorir) battled with sword and bow.

Perhaps Halbarad would have fallen battling the Balrog, mirroring his death in the books during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

My choices [In reply to] Can't Post

Sooo, we have a real mix of eras and races here, but anyway

Farmer Maggot (Frodo)

Eowyn (Sam) She could SO do this.

Kili & Fili (Merry & Pippin) Young and something of a double act

Radagast the Brown (Gandalf)

Me!! Failing that, Halbarad (Aragorn) Every fellowship needs a ranger Laugh

Galadriel (Legolas) No worries here. She can make up for Radagast's somewhat bumbling personality.

Balin (Gimli) A dwarf, fiercely loyal, proud of his heritage.

Bilbo (Boromir) Let's face it, he really wanted to come, he could defend 'Merry and Pippin' in a pinch, and may well be tempted by the ring in the end.

"Unlikely heroes" [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Radagast. Yeah, I know what you're saying about Barliaman and Nob. They don't come across as folk who are suited to be saviors of Middle-Earth like Sam and Frodo. However, who (other than Gandalf) would have thought that Sam and Frodo, or any hobbit for that matter, were well suited for such a task? Especially Sam, a simple gardener. An "unlikely" choice for such an all-important, epic quest. Barliaman and Nob fit the bill in that respect.

My 9 walkers [In reply to] Can't Post

Frodo....Beren, friend of beasts and birds so help is available in the wild.

Sam....Luthien, has the power of three races and the love between her and Beren will provide great strength to both of them in tough times.

Gandalf....Melian, another very powerful Maia, plus when going on a dangerous quest every girl needs her mum.

Legolas....Beleg, the greatest huntsman ever, look out Mummerkils.

Gimli....Durin I, ummm just because.

Merry....Huor, valiant and self sacrificing for friends against impossible odds.

Pippin....Hurin, for the same reasons as above, plus he was the greatest warrior ever among men, just ask the countless orcs and seventy trolls he slew at TBOUT.

Aragorn....Elendil, Aragorn was noted as being most like Elendil, more so than any of his forefathers. Plus this keeps Narsil/ Anduril in the Fellowship.

Boromir....Faramir, all the benefits, none of the flaws.

Bill the Pony...Rochallar, any horse that would go to the gates of Angband is going to travel wherever he damn well likes in the Third Age. If Rochallar was at the gates of Moria the Watcher in the Water would have taken one look at him and gone back to reading his newspaper or whatever he was doing before he attacked the Fellowship. Also Rochallar gets included just on the sheer strength of having such a cool name.
