Newsstand very rightly advertised it as the July 6th issue. I just assumed that since it was said that the Hobbit issue was coming out this Frriday (the 6th) and folk already had it in their sweaty excited hands that that was the issue to buy. So it is officially the July 13th issue. And because Newsstand is an online service and is importing the mags it is probably a week behind the States.

So Bilbo grabs a picture of his parents before he leaves?

I like it. Perhaps the Dwarves find the picture while being rounded up by the Elves. Bilbo can't say/do anything as it will give away his disguise.

I'm pretty sure the picture at Bag-End is Bilbo's father.

I wasn't actually making a point here, this just happened to be the only image I have of the Bag-End picture on my laptop But, it is interesting that this photo-frame could belong to Bilbo. The fact that the image is on the left implies that the frame holds 2 pictures (that or the image is flipped) otherwise the picture would be on the right. Maybe the pictures are there to represent his Tookish and Baggins sides. Bilbo might take the frame out and look at it to help with decisions like "should I save the dwarves from the spiders" Could be that he then drops it while wearing the Ring and the elves find it and question the dwarves with it. (Just a thought)

It's likely that the Elves are going to be very suspicious of the Dwarves (excluding the obvious). Finding the frame and the Dwarves escaping from the spider's cacoons, they'll probably realise something isn't quite right.

Just got my copy in the mail today, here in the US (Gandalf/Bilbo on cover.) Boy, am I glad I'm a subscriber! Best $30 I spent this yr! Very nice preview on Comin-Con, as well as Jo Rowling's new novel. (minor plot spoilers too! Going to be a big change, as well as surreal!)

but although I agree that the picture in Bag End is likely Bilbo's father, the silver frame of the woman's portrait looks distinctly dwarvish in design. I still suspect that it's Gloin's wife

I was going to say that it doesn't look like a dwarvish photo frame, but then again, I don't know what a dwarvish photo frame would look like

They are small paintings/drawings of Peter & Fran as Hobbits. They were said to be Bilbo's Parents.

Just because something is somewhat angular, doesn't mean its dwarven. I mean, who gave the dwarves a monopoly on angular!

I've just found it yesterday at a local Wegmans market.
"Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house." - Aragorn

This is something i was trying to get across in the Arkenstone thread. This isnt to say i dont like the design of the dwarves - i do. I also think that if everything they have is angular then its making them seem culturally too one dimensional. Saying that i think in the films, flowing curves means elves, angularity means dwarves. I do hope to see some more variety in dwarven design in TH though!

Whenever I say something "looks dwarven" or any other culture, I'm almost always talking in terms of the film designs, which were quite rigid.
