Turin in Avatar: The Last Airbender?!

Okay, for those who don't know, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is a cartoon series on Nickelodeon which just began its third season. It's a bit hit, and rightly so: it's one of the best written TV series of ANY kind to appear in the last 10 years. I mean movie quality writing. It probably helped that 5 years passed between when they originally came up with the idea and when the series actually went into production, so they had time to plan it out! (hey, it took JRR 15 years to write LOTR). It's a very Eastern-culture oriented show. ********During episode 4 of season 3, "Sokka's Master", the character Sokka realizes that he doesn't contribute much to the group (he's kind of like their Pippin) so he resolves to be trained in the use of a blade by a swordmaster. After completing his training, his master tells him he has to forge his own sword, and he gets to pick the material. Instead of using what was in the foundry, he says he wants to use his own material: Earlier in the episode, a meteorite fell from the sky in the outskirts of town, so they bring it back to the swordsmith and take iron in it to forge a black sword. They forged a black sword out of iron from a meteorite. THEY FORGED. A *BLACK* SWORD. OUT OF IRON. FROM A METEORITE!!

If Sokka is more dangerous to his friends than his enemies, he's probably a knockoff of Turin. Especially if he kills his best friend with the black meteoric iron sword.
With caffeine, all things are possible. The pity of Bilbo will screw up the fate of many.

Another Avatar fan here -- it's the kind of show that works on a lot of levels. Intelligently written, but still kid friendly. Very Hobbit-like, in its tone, I think. I think the Sokka/Turin parallel ends with the sword making; he's not enough of a tragic figure. Zuko (sp?) on the other hand might qualify for Turin-status, depending on what they do with him...
