Food and cheer and song [In reply to] Can't Post

usually mean a party is happening.

Hoarded gold is nice, but usually you're just sitting on top of it all alone, trying to keep it.

Well, *hoarded* gold doesn't do anyone any good. [In reply to] Can't Post

Do I get to spend any of it? Cool

To be honest, however, with the tummy troubles I've been having, food doesn't sound all that appealing either. (Had Smashburger for lunch today. Big mistake. Bleah...)

Are there any Larkburgers in your area? [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't tried them yet, but they have been suggested as an acceptable alternative to Smashburger.

Not literally made of larks, lol! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's called Larkburger because the burger first appeared on the menu in the Larkspur Restaurant in Vail, Colorado.

lol ... thanks for the laugh [In reply to] Can't Post

I've made the connection of that line of Thorin's to this English Morris song before. But it bears reposting, imo.

LYRICS:
THE HAPPY MAN
How happy's that man that's free from all care
That loves to make merry, that loves to make merry
O'er a drop of good beer
With his pipe and his friends puffing hours away
Singing song after song 'till he hails the new day
He can laugh, dance and sing and smoke without fear,
Be as happy as a king 'till he hails a new year.

How happy's the man that's free from all strife
He envies no other, he envies no other
But travels through life
With his pipe and his friends puffing hours away
Singing song after song 'till he hails the new day
He can laugh, dance and sing and smoke without fear,
Be as happy as a king 'till he hails a new year.

Our seaman of old, they fear not their foes
They throw away discord, they throw away discord
And to mirth they're inclined
With their pipes and their friends puffing hours away
Singing song after song 'till they hail the new day
He can laugh, dance and sing and smoke without fear,
Be as happy as a king 'till he hails a new year.

The Happy Man seems a Hobbity sort of song, don't you think? Pipe and beer. Singing and Dancing. Friends. And to mirth they're inclined.
In a final magpie-ish note, if you want to sing this song like my friend Tom, you'll sing, "They throw away discord, they throw away dat chord" ... which always makes me laugh so hard I can't sing anymore.

You can listen to samples of the song (and buy them if you wish) here:
http://www.amazon.com/Happy-Man/dp/B0060602N8
http://www.amazon.com/...y-Man/dp/B000ZDM52I/ (Fairport Convention)
http://www.amazon.com/...y-Man/dp/B00599CF32/ (Fairport Convention - might be the same song... might be a different recording of it)

or watch Fairport Convention perform it live here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgApCJsF6FU

or watch Morris dancers dance to the tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaB-NHVMoOw

I have it on the recording: Son of Morris On (which followed the CD "Morris On") by Ashley Hutchings and friends. But there's no sample or video for it online.

I defy you to listen and not feel happy afterwards... but I love Morris dancing and not everyone does. :-)

Depends on what stage of life one is in. [In reply to] Can't Post

I would like to have put food and cheer and song but currently i am so broke there is nothing much to sing and be cheery about let alone buy food. If i had enough money to pay for the basics (bills, food, rent) then i would have gone with option 1. I think though if you ask me in 1 year i will say option 1.

Everyone always says money doesnt buy you happiness, but i would rather be unhappy with money than unhappy with no money. As others have said money brings options and options lead to happiness i believe. As long as the person with the money doesnt become consumed with greed for making more money for the sake of having more money.

you need a certain amount, but more than that is useless, and it only does you good when it's circulating.

But then it wouldn't be hoarded [In reply to] Can't Post

the idea is do you love money for its own sake? Or do you see it as a means to an end (an end apart from having a pile of gold around to be spent on nothing and no one?)

Food, cheer and song [In reply to] Can't Post

If it didn't say 'hoarded' then I may have chosen the gold so that I could spend it on food, cheer and song ;P

I've been a poor disabled student/freelancer for 8 years and honestly money is not a huge driving factor in my life. I like to have enough to pay for rent, food, power, internet and coffee & cake with friends once a week, but I don't see how having loads of money would make my life significantly happier. I already have a wonderful family and loyal, supportive and loving friends - including everyone here at TORN :)
