I assumed it was Rivendell - but it's not very Rivendell-y. Could definitely part of a wall.

The books are almost entirely told from Bilbo's POV... we get very little of the dwarves' viewpoint except where it is readily apparent to Bilbo. OTOH, I don't think you can do this as easily with a movie -- nor do I think you want to. We will be watching and empathizing with all the main characters, is my guess, not just Bilbo. If the dwarves are in barrels, you only get Bilbo's half of the story, wondering whether the dwarves drowned or not. But as the audience, we don't just want to wonder whether the dwarves survived -- we actually know that already. We want to know what it was like to go down a stream in a barrel. A movie puts you in the action in a way a book does not. (books have other great advantages, of course, such as more introspection into a character's thoughts!) As such, I expect the scene would go like such: Bilbo packs dwarves in sealed barrels. Elves toss barrels into river. Bilbo follows along for a while, and starts worrying whether the dwarves will drown, especially as river gets more turbulent. He helps unseal/dwarves unseal themselves at some point. We get to go on a tumbly ride down the river. They wash up on some shore at some point. I do think the tone is different, of course -- Bilbo's emotional state in the scene is very different than that of the dwarves. But it is not a loss -- the tone is different because as a movie audience we want to see the story from the perspective of the dwarves as well, not just Bilbo. It is more of a "see, don't tell" experience. There is some suspense to the limited perspective offered in the books, but given well all know how the story ends, this perspective gives us more empathy for the dwarves.

Or rather the actor playing Balin? He has rarely been seen in the VBs, and I've never seen him interviewed or anything about his role, like many of his cast members.

The EEs are by no means perfect, but then neither are the theatricals. What small issues I have with the films are not enough to ruin my enjoyment of them.

the FAQ entry was changed to make it less frustrating for those uploading attachments. I would be one of those frustrated people. ;) I still go up to 50kb for pics not hosted here at TORn.

We've speculated before that the reason Stott (Balin) hasn't been interviewed/seen that much is because he is one of the major Dwarves in the film (not really seen RA or MF either). Either that or he's shy

you REDO that scene so it matches the book. IMO that scene was one of the things that Tolkien wrote cinematically. It would've worked well on screen as written in the books. I was gripping my seat thinking "Here it comes! Here it comes! Wait! Those are CAVE TROLLS busting the wall down! I was awaiting the dread of the Gandalf/Wiki High noon showdown all trilogy long. Alas...
Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. He also hung out with a grumpy tall dude in a hat (Mike Nesmith.) While we're at it let's just make Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork Merry & Pippin.
