Why people just donīt "Like" (Social Networks questions)
|
Can't Post
|
|
(If administrators find the topic out of place, feel free to move it. I really didnīt know where to post some question I have about Facebook and Twitter, think this board is an interesting place to read opinions) Well. 1-I was wondering about Facebook, find a bit odd to see how much people never link the "Like" button to posts they are subscribed to or status of contacts or friends. I say so cuz I am one the few who (using cellphone or computer) always post a "Like" to things I read and see and are nice or worthy. These days no one can say so easily "I donīt see Facebook cuz I donīt have connection". I know some doesnīt have but this topic is for those who obviously have it. Obviously, no one will "Like" something they donīt like or something they donīt care, but the most of times they read the post and find it good to see, but you have 4000 subscribers or friends and only 10 "Likes" the post. It is amazing really, it made me curious about it. So, my curiosity is simple about : What does make people to "Like" a status, and what makes people find it hard, or just donīt have interest in "Liking" a status in Facebook? 2-And about Twitter I have a group of questions : I want to know what can I do if I donīt want to read some peopleīs replies if those people are not blocked, if I can delete the tweet before reading it as I can do in You Tube. It seems we can not do that, somehow you have to read everything cuz itīs always there. Opinions and thoughts welcome

Facebook is annoying full stop. I don't care what you've just eaten, if you've just been to the gym, if you have had your hair cut, been on holiday, or remotely bothered by your relationship troubles. I don't care if your sober or drunk, I'm not that bothered that your having your 6th child, and I certainly don't care that you cant sleep!! Why do people feel the need to tell us this rubbish?! I know every single person on my facebook, but would say that 80% of them are acquantances rather than friends. The only reason why I'm friends with 80% of them is because I haven't deleted them yet! Based on that, I'm not going to "like" someone's status, because 80% of the time, I wont care. Even with friends and family I very rarely "like" something, unless it is of interest or some good news. I've recently fallen out with a family member simply because I didn't "like" something on their profile. I'm sorry, but 5 years ago I wasn't required to "like" everything, why should I now?! What happened to good old writing via letter or talking on the phone! I could rant about this for ages.... Edit: As for the people with thousands of friends, I'm not surprised that 10 or so people like their status. Those 10 people are probably the only people they actually know! I certainly don't know 6000 people. Edit 2: I should also probably add that I only use Facebook to play scrabble. Very rarely I will update my status. And even then, I recognise that only a handful of people will care

I don't care if your sober or drunk, I'm not that bothered that your having your 6th child, and I certainly don't care that you cant sleep!! Just re-read my above message, and should really add some more explanation. The above probably comes across very rude. Of course, everything above is very important for the person posting (and has every right to share their news). But because we are only acquaintances, I'm not bothered, and wont "like" it. What makes it worse is that there are a handful of people that post all of the above in one single day. Maybe it's just my friends? Forums on the other hand are very different places. Forums, like TORN, have a real community feel to them. There seems to be more interaction on a forum, everyone are friends (and get along!). The people we talk to on a forum, talk back to you. If something is of interest, or you have good news to share, you post a thread. On a forum we actually discuss the topic or news. On facebook, you "like" it and that's it. Very little interaction with so-called "friends". On a forum you are also more likely to meet like-minded people. Friends are only on facebook because you went to school with them for a couple of years, and spoke to once or twice! I hope that clears up why I am more active on this forum, rather than facebook.

and have yet to figure out how Twitter is a good use of my time ... that is, the time spent there does not result in a good return in regards to amusement or information. If what you are asking (about Twitter) is... you've put a tweet out there and someone responds to it... how can you 'block' that response or 'delete' it... then have you checked their support FAQs? https://support.twitter.com/...ps/31-twitter-basics It doesn't look like you can delete other people's tweets from 'your timeline'. And honestly, I don't know how you could delete a Tweet before reading it. It's so short one couldn't help but read it, I would think. But if you block someone - even after they've replied - wouldn't any replies they made disappear from your Twitter page? Have you tried that?

I have two accounts, my personal one with my name which I have for workīs demanding (And I wish to find a way to avoid people who look for my name, all the relatives I havenīt seen in years, relatives I donīt care to have watching over me or something, or whoever else) What can we do? All those people are just there popping up in the section "You might be friend of this person..." Jesus XD And I have an account with a nickname for LOTR , music, movies, books whatever I like not related to my work (Or I try to not relate both accounts). In this account I have some random people, and precisely some of them are like that: One of those " friends" posted today a picture of her teen daughter and say "Isnīt she beautiful?" and I say "gosh I am a total stranger" what if I were a pervert? Of course I didnīt liked her status, I personally donīt like personal picture of strangers, but people like a lot to post them. People really get weird there. I do "Like" the pictures of my family and real friends, in the other account... but none them "Like" my status or things I post XD and I am a family member. I know, it can very weird. Overall I am not such friend of social networks but being in there I just wonder. In the other hand we have like LOTR pages, so there are thousands of subscribers, a few number "Like" the post. Usually if I am subscribed to a fandom, I do "Like" what they post. So odd

All those people are just there popping up in the section "You might be friend of this person..." Jesus XD If you go under privacy settings you can block individual people, so they can never find you on facebook. You can also block people by going directly to their profile and clicking the cog button and report/block. Of course I didnīt liked her status, I personally donīt like personal picture of strangers, but people like a lot to post them. This is a big problem for all social networks. It's the reason why I don't accept random people. I do "Like" the pictures of my family and real friends, in the other account... but none them "Like" my status or things I post XD and I am a family member. This is just individual response. I will normally like a family or close friends status if it is good news or something funny, for example. I don't ever expect them to like something I say. It's not a requirement after all! After the major Christchurch earthquakes, for example, Twitter was the fastest way to get short, accurate information out to the wider public, and for the emergency responders to become aware of issues on specific streets. The proviso is that someone must monitor social networks so that inaccurate information can be corrected immediately.

You follow things by hashtags, correct? How did you know what hastag to follow? The one time I tried to follow an event, I clicked on a link in a tweet with a hashtag for that event... and it took me to a site with an image that makes you want to scrub out your eyes. I figured I was a stupid rube for falling for that but I don't know how one determines what are legitimate tweets and what are malicious/troll tweets.

One person uses a hashtag that catches on and more people tweet with it to link their posts, and on it goes cumulatively. For the earthquakes, #EQNZ caught on within a couple of days. It's a good hashtag because it's very short yet is self-explanatory. It's now the go-to hashtag for any earthquake updates in New Zealand. I use Twitter only for emergency communications like this. I get lost in it otherwise, not knowing how to follow a conversation (so I don't).

I have one FB account, with my full name and some history, but no current address, etc. Access is limited to "Friends". I have several kinds of individual friends: family members who live a long way away and I rarely see, but am interested in keeping up with; a few old friends from 'way back that it's fun keeping up with, and some local and online friends who occasionally post something of mutual interest: a piece of news or advocacy, that sort of thing. Then I have a few "causes" (political groups, charities, TORn, etc.) that I support and want to hear from. Occasionally I'll sign a petition or send money when they're having a drive. I assume that my "friends" are interested in me at about the same level at which I'm interested in them. So, I don't post about getting my nails done or having lunch, but I do post when I'm leaving for New Zealand, climb a mountain, just saw a wonderful performance, or am celebrating or mourning something of significance to me. I equate "likes" to cheers. Most of my friends' status posts are fairly routine, and I'm usually mildly interested in reading them, but will only "like" one that's outstanding or significant in some way (e.g., he won a prize; she is leaving for New Zealand). I do not do Twitter.

I mean, the first time you got on... what did you do to find tweets that were pertinent. And how did the word get passed (so to speak) for EQNZ? I honestly don't have a strategy for figuring it out and I just go to Google News (because my news need isn't as pressing as yours was and it sufficed). It's like Twitter has it's own language and skill set that I'm completely lacking. I figure stuff out (like lol means laugh out loud) if I'm exposed to it long enough. But how does one figure out what hashtag is being used 1 hour or 1 day after the tornado goes through town?

I wouldn't use "Like" (or "+1") for the same reason I don't have a Facebook account. I don't want to be tracked, and I don't want to trivialize myself. Also, I have never owned a mobile device such a cell phone. I am a software developer, yet I feel society today is heading deeply into tragic irony for being so interconnected yet so myopically tied to the small screen and unaware or uncaring of it's immediate surroundings and local relationships. That's why I don't "like."

the #EQNZ hashtag was already generally known. Going on from Aunt Dora's post, I figure people started by searching for Geonet, Christchurch City Council and 'Christchurch earthquake' on Twitter, then saw this hashtag popping up on most posts after a day or so.

I don't use Twitter, but I do use Facebook. I got on it because the other people in my school cohort all joined, and we use it to update each other on our progress since we left grad school. I've also connected with a lot of people from my home town, and members of my family that I don't otherwise hear much from (primarily cousins). I don't have a lot of "friends" - less than 175. There are quite a few people that I have "unsubscribed" from so I don't see their updates, primarily the ones who like to report their every move. I may go onto their walls every now and then to see what's up. I've never had anyone complain to me about not "liking" their status nor have I taken it personally that particular people didn't "like" mine. I have had people take exception to something I said - almost always because they misinterpreted it - or object to something I have "shared" that isn't compatible with their opinions, just as happens here sometimes. But overall it's been just fine. I actually know what my older brother is up to some of the time, which is nice because he does not communicate via any other medium. Seriously, I don't think the guy has called me more than 5 times in 40 years.

and I use the "like" button pretty frequently on facebook. It's a way of letting friends know that I enjoyed their post even when I can't think of anything to say that would add to the discussion. Most of my fb friends don't post on their every move. They post beautiful photos of the landscape or wildlife or sunsets, funny stories about things that have happened to them, great quotes by people I enjoy like Buddha or Einstein, pithy jokes from George Takei, information about upcoming solar eclipses and other interesting things, videos of international folk dances that we both know, and of course news about family events. Here's an example of the kind of cool stuff my friends post. It's a lot like the kind of cool stuff people post here. I also follow political and church groups I'm interested in, as well as a few businesses. And TORn, of course. I don't do any of the games or apps. I have two facebook accounts, one through my work e-mail which I mostly use to keep up to date on the gay-straight alliance of which I'm the faculty sponsor (they use fb as their primary way of getting out news about events they're doing), and the other one to which I don't invite my students until after they're graduated, which is for everyone else. I have a cheat-sheet to keep track of the 20-some TOrn folks I know there who use nicknames here but their real names there.

... there are groups of friends who just chat - the one blessing is that the individual tweets are very short - and there are businesses and professionals using it for work reasons. Which is why I'm there. A friend suggested it to me as a way to promote/ attract interest for a particular project and that aspect of it does seem to work once you start finding the sorts of people who might be interested. I've linked up with a lot of another writers. But I don't think being on Twitter and just saying 'Look at what I'm doing' would work - seems to me that getting to 'know' people and joining in other conversations is part of it. I find it quite good for information - often people will mention a book or link to a site of interest that I haven't heard of. I've never used 'Favourite' - or 'Like' on other sites, because I can't see why anyone else would care whether I like a thing or not. I'm not on Facebook at all - never liked the sound of it.

I might start following someone because they are working on a project I'm interested in. But I get every tweet they make ... not just the one about that project. And in my limited experience (I can have infinite patience when searching for just the right image... or making a tiny acorn lantern for a fairy doll... but almost no patience when deciding someone is interesting to me or not)... the tweets on that one thing I was interested in comprised only a small portion of what they tweeted about. So I might get 15 tweets from that person for every 1 that dealt with the matter I had interest in. I think it's a matter of upping one's stats. So it is advisably better business practice to tweet 20 times a week.. even if only 2 are on the main focus of the business... then to only tweet what one thinks will be of high interest to people who might be following your business. At least marketing advisers tell businesses and business entities that. For me, as a consumer, it's the kiss of death. If you've tweeted 15 times off topic for every one on topic... you're off my list. I wouldn't even mind this so much except for two reasons: ONE: I have to 'visit' Twitter to get my feed. I have an RSS feeder on my iGoogle page so I can check new entries on blogs I'm following on a page with other info on it. But I have been unable to find a Twitter app for iGoogle so I have to remember to 'visit' Twitter to see new tweets. Considering I wasn't reading anything terribly interesting on it, I don't bother to visit. TWO: I can't 'discharge' tweets I've read from my display panel. I work on a system with RSS Feeds and emails: It's in my inbox/display panel till I read and attend to it. When I've read it or attended to it, it's archived. If it's still in my inbox/display panel, it needs attention. It functions as a 'to do' list. My Twitter display is always full. I can't discharge those tweets I've read. It just looks like clutter to me and since a full box means lots to 'attend' to... it's evokes a 'need to do' response. When in fact, it's the same 20 tweets that I wasn't interested in yesterday or the day before. Obviously, Twitter and Facebook works for people. It just doesn't work for me. (well, I haven't even given Facebook a try and don't plan to... but I think I've got a good understanding of my temperament and I won't second guess that decision). But that doesn't surprise me. I'm in that demographic that no one but AARP cares about. And I have a personality that comprises less than 4% of the population. NOTHING directed at the mainstream suits me. :-p And I can not, even if I try, 'chat' on the phone. My husband will call me when he's traveling long distances to try to stay awake and I can't think of anything to say to him. It's too bad that, when I do have something to say to him when he's in the room, he rarely is interested! - and see, that was almost a throwaway comical comment. But it seems to me the heart of the matter for me. I don't so small talk well. I'm like Sheldon in regards to social skills. When something is important, I want to spend time developing thoughts and delving into the subject. I want your attention and have a meaty conversation/dialog. I also can't do chat like on Barliman's for that reason either. It takes me too long to develop a thought and type it out and rework that sentence and correct my typos and spelling (to the best of my ability). I'm also not a huge fan of threads that ask people things.. then everyone gives their answer but no one has a dialog about it. It's as if we all thought our own answer was really important... but no one else's was enough to read it and/or comment on it. It's the semblance of socializing without the heart of it.
