Hobbit set rumours in Upper Hutt (Greater Wellington area). Can't Post

" Rumours have Peter Jackson's The Hobbit being filmed at the former General Motors site in Upper Hutt.
A photographer from the Upper Hutt Leader taking photos there early today was asked to leave by security staff.
New Zealand Defence Force vehicles were seen in the packed carpark outside the building and security staff said they were working alongside the force.
There were signs of the set from outside the building including what looked like a thatched roof and trees.
When security staff were asked if the Upper Hutt Leader could have a look around on site the staff replied they could join the long, and ever growing list of people who want to see the set."

What’s the New Zealand Defence Force there for? Are they more like army troops (foreign use only) or national guard (mostly domestic use only) in American terms? Or are they just doing crowd-control stuff? I wouldn’t think you’d need military for that. Hm.

The NZ military helped build the roads then. And NZ army were also used as actors at the battle before the Black Gate.

There is no national guard in NZ.

Oh, maybe that’s like the Army Corps of Engineers, then?

NZDF comprises army, navy and air services. [In reply to] Can't Post

You can read up more about it here, if you're interested.

Sauron: "Mine's better."

In the UK signs like that are used, and normally indicate director (or something along those lines). I doubt it stands for anything to do with Tolkien, more the production (if it's Hobbit related at all!)

And tell us what you saw... Or even if you didn't see anything, just how the general surroundings look like. If there's tatched roofs, could it be either Rhosgobel or Beorn's Hall, or even the huts of the raft Elves? Or the wood-men?

But every word you say today
Gets twisted 'round some other way
And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

If my memory serves me, Rhosgobel is built around a tree. And I still assume the stone building seen previously is Beorn's hall.

Alexander Industrial Park, Upper Hutt, New Zealand

Image date on Google Earth: 20 February 2008. Image updates are not common, such as this image is four years old. Area in close proximity is less than two years old. Can be a bit of a patchwork.

Google Earth is the software downloaded to one's computer. Google Maps is the online version. They both share the same maps.

If the location is not accurate, correction welcome Smile

Raft elves - I looked into this a bit more [In reply to] Can't Post

In the Hobbit, it is said that Bilbo spotted the raft-elves village by the river shore when the barrels had washed up against the shore. There are a couple of websites that say that this village was named "Celebannon". Now I've looked in the index of HOME and can't find any reference to it. I presume this is one of those "fan-made" names?

I really like the idea of the Elves living in thatched houses. Very different from what we will see at Mirkwood, and from Rivendell and Lothlorien.

During filming of King Kong little KK signs turned up all over. And on LOTR I'm fairly certain there were HD ones pointing the way to Helms Deep. The LR will mean something... just what?
