I don't see it happening to be honest. Not that I wouldn't love to see the hobbit be the highest grossing film of all time but those are 2 huge flicks that are surely blockbusters. Avengers has made over 200 million in less than 3 days so I believe its gonna be a tall order to top them both together

I just saw Avengers and it was the bomb. I'm sure TDKR will be the same, AND, i'm sure The Hobbit will be as well. But to say TH will top the two combined is totally unrealistic.

Hype & The Political Prognostications
[In reply to]
|
Can't Post

Politicians say things like this - not because they believe it will be true, but because they wish it to become true by saying so. For example, "Ladies and gentlemen, the next President of the United States!" at campaign rallies. In this thread's case, the root of hyperbole is hype - like a self-fulfilling prophesy. If it gets repeated enough, it could more easily become true whereas had it not been said, it would not have. If there were a phrase, saying, or expression for this kind of political hype, I'd love to know it so I don't have to explain it each time. Perhaps you should throw Prometheus into the totals The Hobbit will beat to increase the hype.

I'm sure The Hobbit movies will do well, and perhaps if you're speaking of both movies as if they were one I might agree with you. But individually--no. Would be great if it came true, though.

But for its legacy, I hope it does very well. I'd love it to do well cause I don't like that a Harry Potter movie did better box office than RotK.

But HP had a lot longer time basis to build up hype & fans than LOTR (in terms of film, not books, of course). Plus ROTK (and LOTR in general) did a lot better regarding awards - which I think is better for a film than box office takings (if a film has one 10 or so oscars then I'm likely to watch it!) But yet, I agree too. I *want* the film to do well. But more importantly I *want* to enjoy and like it. Everything after that is a bonus!

I'm wondering if (again, legacy wise) awards count more than box office? I would think so. Anyway, what always remains most important to me is how a film tells the story and how it looks on the blu-ray. That's probably the main reason why I'm not getting fussed about the 48 fps issue. And just maybe, the controversy over the fps issue will bump up the box office because people will be curious.

as we prefer our board members' eyes to not bleed while reading posts. I doubt The Hobbit will out-do both films combined as we're talking about three juggernauts here. However I expect The Hobbit to do ridiculously well, even amid the strong competition for viewers' dollars.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. or both of them, individually, but not collectively. For various reasons I can see The Hobbit possibly beating out The Dark Knight, and likely beating The Avengers, but both combined is a tall order for any film.
"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

And Snow White and the Huntsman, for that matter...poor, stupid Universal... BTW, by "film", are we discussing just AUJ or TH simply as one project? Personally, I think AUJ may make around 700 mil worldwide, and TABA may just join ROTK in grossing over a billion.
My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, with axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!
