will you cover your eyes, plug your ears, and hum Yankee Doodle when she's on screen? [In reply to] Can't Post

(that's what I used to do when I was trying to block out my squabbling sons)

Or will you just go to the bathroom? (with those giant cups of pop, one must find just the right scene)

Or will you boycott the whole movie?

How? [In reply to] Can't Post

Are you not planning to see the movie? And we don't actually know that she's a Mary Sue. For all the big hoopla, all we really know is that she's a female Elf guard.

Now, if she decided to tag along with the dwarves and play the hero at every opportunity, that would be worrying and I'd be right on the bandwagon with you. I don't actually expect her to be as large and intrusive a part as many seem to fear, though, so I'm not really very worried about it.

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Evangeline Lily, or whatever her name is, is smoking hot. Only way she could be hotter is if they do her up as an elf. The only way they could make her hotter still is to make her a butt kicking elf. Tick, tick and tick.

I have to say, I think women kicking butt is hot too (says the straight female). Not because 'men' are getting their due. Just in that it rocks. I thought Kahlan was as hot as Richard (and I thought he was hot) in Legend of the Seeker.

Oh yeah, folks. Hot. I think some men and women are hot and I'm not embarrassed to admit it.

Waits for someone to suggest I'm a silly fangirl. Try it. I got a cane and I'm not afraid to use it!

If I wrote such a thing, it would be in complete sarcasm and the "tick, tick, tick" would be the sound of a time bomb. For if that's the primary draw to her character, eye candy and hormone quencher, it would be a shallow movie in dire straights. But whatever wavering faith I have in Peter Jackson going with the latest in technology just because it's cool, I have more faith in him, and his female writing partners, than that.

about the character either but I have to totally agree with Silverlode on this one... Shocked shocking as it may soundWink but I don't think she will be that big a deal, granted I don't like the idea of a character solely created by Jackson and crew so I am hoping that they have incorporated some of Tolkiens other characters into her like they did with characters in LOTR (ex. giving treebeard lines that were Tom Bombadil's in the book) Time will tell there are ALOT of other travesties that have been pushed onto these films besides Tauriel...

Which is to say: if we think a kick-ass character is hot, then we can't be proper adults and we would put pointless sexualizations over character.

tsk tsk tsk...

People are much more multidimensional than that. I kind of grow weary (and that's the nice way of phrasing it) that people are so quick to assume they know me that well.

Well, if being a proper adult means one can't have fun then I don't want to be a proper adult. Just like I don't want to be a real fan.

But I know what I want. I want a place where my friends laugh with me even when I'm being stupid and silly and pointless and frivolous because they know that ... when needed, I step up to the plate. I hold a job. I raised two kids. I manage two websites. I taught school. I taught folk dance. I got my husband through cancer. I buried my mother. I danced with bells on my legs. I sang with friends. I sent an email a day to friends who were going through a tough time. I went back to school at 50. I will figure out how to get by when my husband's business goes under.

There... proper adult enough for you?

When fun passes my way, I grab a little. I will not apologize.

Peace out.

raring their head I see, heaven forbid I would make a tounge in cheek comment based on a trivial personal opinion I have.

Personally I am more worried about PJ's reinventions than fillers, they are much more damagng to Middle Earth.

As far as the opinion of a movie for proper adults is concerned, is that what you are really expecting from a film adaptation of a childrens book by a director and writers who showed no understanding of the source material when they last ventured into Middle Earth, whether it was with respect to the characters, narrative or themes, and a total lack of subtlety in their retelling of the tale, with in your face expostion that required no intellectual exercise to understand? If you are going to berate me on what should have been taken as obviously a lighthearted comment, do not use the expected qualities of a movie that will be well short of what it should be as your line in the sand.

+1 [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm going to have to put a +1 on this point of view. Sex is to be respected as much as anything else as a wonderful thing and certainly not treated as a lesser order of character. But I do believe the previous post's operative word was "pointless" sexualization as in something for it's own sake - perhaps not so puritanical as it might appear. There can be purpose to fun.

Dig a little deeper [In reply to] Can't Post

and you will find that Tolkien thought it important to remove such detail, which is a common device in some forms of story tellling. It is not that it did not happen, it is just that it by removing the coarse from a story it maintains it's "high" elements. It is partly a veneer but some story telling is not done in a warts and all manner. But hey that is just another aspect of Tolkiens storey telling the film makers failed to comprehend or chose to ignore.

I mean why have Gimli crying "Barak Khazad, Khazad ai menu" in his great voice and wreaking havoc among the orcs at Helms Deep when you can have a visual joke about dwarf tossing instead.

I'll admit it was a pretty inflammatory post. [In reply to] Can't Post

When I say "proper adult," my contrast was more with what might otherwise be termed an "adult" film; that is, a porno. I find there to be nothing mature about porn. And although I was being deliberately glib, the underlying thing that bothered me was the implication that the most valuable thing about Evangeline Lilly (a human being) was essentially her smokin' bod. You'll notice I wasn't replying to your post because your post was respectful. The post I did respond to I thought was disrespectful. I meant no offense to you. I was just trying to stick up for someone who has more to offer than a pair of legs. I imagine ElendilTheShort didn't mean any harm but if you read the post you might see what it was I found objectionable.

You're right that people are multidimensional. I would assert that one can go through all the struggles and triumphs of life and still emerge on the other end capable of ignorance or of making bad decisions. I think fun and joy are essential to human existence but I do think it's worth examining the effects of our perceptions on the world around us. I have no problem with sexual attraction (anyone who does needs to have a talk with their parents). But because I care about these films (not enough to get all fussed over them, but I want them to be good) I have an interest in seeing the few female characters that are to exist in them represented honestly. Anyone who says women as a whole are treated fairly in the media is fooling themselves. Oversexualization of women is a real issue, even if I overreacted in this instance. I don't really expect to solve the world's problems in one post. I just wanted to express my distaste, at the very least. Tolkein wrote so few women it would be nice for Tauriel, an invented character, to be more than a mannequin.

I hope you realize I'm not a random internet nazi-troll-monster... in fact, I'm probably the silliest person I know. If there's one thing I understand, it's the need to enjoy life! I only brought up the issue because I think it's too important to ignore. If being a proper adult meant not having fun then I would still be in the womb throwing a flashlight rave with the placenta. Thankfully, being a proper adult is more about taking responsibility for yourself and being brave enough to stand up for what you believe in.

One thing is certain, it's not normally my role. I guess some tongue-in-cheek comments just affect me more than others. I thought your comment was a bit careless and I'll gladly admit that my post was even more so. Your post read to me as "Hot actress's name or role in the film isn't important to me, but her sexy body is." Or, if you factor and solve for X. I apologize if that was a false impression. I had no inkling that you were being lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek (as Magpie was not), something I might have suspected had this comment been written by one of some other posters who share your opinion. So your intent went over my head - and normally I don't think I'm the last to detect sarcasm.
