Religious observances and practices in Middle Earth Can't Post

It is often said there is very little religion in the LOTR and for the most part, this is true. However, it seems by the 3rd age the practices of the past were largely forgotten or ignored (by men). In earlier ages, Numenor had the Three Prayers to Eru as regular religious calendar events until finally corrupted by Sauron and Ar-Pharazon. It does not appear that the old kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor revived the Numenorean faith of Eru (correct?).

http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Three_Prayers

"...Erukyermë ("Prayer to Eru"), Erulaitalë ("Praise of Eru"), and Eruhantalë ("Thanksgiving to Eru") and took place in the spring, midsummer, and autumn respectively."

The elves followed a similar calendar with regular seasonal feasts and celebrations.

http://www.invasivedesigns.com/...ligious_rituals.html

Varda Elentári / Elbereth / Gilthoniel, etc. was the primary focus rather than Eru.

The Hobbits seemed either ignorant or just merely aquainted with some of the dieties, however, they did follow the season celebrations.

Part of the reaction could have been related to the idea [In reply to] Can't Post

that the Powers had almost withdrawn from the world and they were on their own. The Istari and remaining Elf lords were really all that connected the inhabitants of Middle Earth to that which lay beyond. JRRT saw this time as a foreshadowing of the Christian event far into the future so in a sense it was left purposefully in a kind of religious dark age limbo.

Strict Religious Observances [In reply to] Can't Post

I would imagine that the most strict religious rites were actually carried out for the various cults devoted to Melkor. Although I also assume that other cults/religions arose in the East and South around local versions of the other Valar as well as wholly imagined deities.

"Darkness beyond blackest pitch, deeper than the deepest night!
King of Darkness, who shines like gold upon the Sea of Chaos.
I call upon thee and swear myself to thee!
Let the fools who stand before me be destroyed by the power you and I possess!"

The possible twisted cults inaugerated by the Blue Wizards in the East.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Reading about Numenor and its decline showed a rather brutal and extreme Melkor worship cult: human sacrifices, death for those who climbed Meneltarma etc.

Ar-Pharazon and the Numenoreans, in many ways, were the most powerful presence in middle earth as:

"So mighty were the Númenóreans that the servants of Sauron fled even before the battle began and their leader was taken as a prisoner back to the island of Elenna." (Sounds like Napolean going to Elba).

Sauron captured! I wonder how that could have happened (maybe on purpose?)....but he soon twisted Ar Pharazon to the Dark Side. (Ahh...Wormtongue Sr.)

Numenor / Elenna / Westernesse is estimated to have been about [In reply to] Can't Post

167,961 square miles....slightly larger than California at 163,695 sq mi....so for perspective it was quite large.
New Zealand is 103,737 square miles...about the same as Colorado 104,093.

Even more powerful [In reply to] Can't Post

If you consider that this was Sauron with the Ring that an age later Gandalf was so convinced would be powerful enough to crush all resistance in ME even without the Ring, in this case Sauron with the Ring gave up without even putting up a fight! Of course he didn't really, but I think he would have preferred to fight if he could have one. But still, this makes the Numenoreans at the end of the 2nd age pretty powerful

I am so sorry for your loss Bomby [In reply to] Can't Post

And may she see that swift sunrise as well. And may the sigh and the murmur of the waves of your Middle-earth sink into your heart.

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."
— J.R.R. Tolkien

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

I might suggest finding a quieter, more secluded spot.

"Darkness beyond blackest pitch, deeper than the deepest night!
King of Darkness, who shines like gold upon the Sea of Chaos.
