Subliminal Smaug in Clouds

I made a screen capture of Peter Jackson's latest video-blog, somewhere after the 5 minute 30 second mark. It's the part where Director Jackson said he would make use of the 'natural' textures in the shot, because he was impressed with those "Close Encounters" visuals in New Zealand's clouds. I saw something too. Does anyone else? (No CGI there.) Video
full resolution image deleted due to size restrictions full resolution credit to ~Serpenthor from DeviantART for the Smaug artwork in my collage see: link note to TORNOneRing.net- *Thank you for your news about Sir Ian McKellen's planned fundraising tour. The damaged NZ landmark theatre certainly was a tragedy. It lifts my spirits knowing Gandy (as Orlando would say), although complementing PJ's catering I know, had indeed said things subliminally to me, about "duress". There's something to be said about the grand effort, Ian's making at his age for all of us Ringers, there really is. Very organic, golden. see: link

due to size restrictions. From our FAQ's which are posted at the top if this forum: the maximum size of any picture posted should be 525 wide x 400 pixels high (or a better measure is: 210,000 pixels squared - width x height), but no wider than 670 pixels. The maximum file size per picture should be 45k. The cumulative file size of all pictures in one post should not exceed 225k (5 pictures of the maximum filesize of 45k, 10 pictures of a filesize of 22.5k, etc.). Feel free to re-size and repost your second picture.

I read that FAQ, but apparently I goofed up somehow. In fact, I'm not sure exactly what I'm reading here. There goes my B.S. degree in Engineering Tech. I thought when you multiplied height and width for a total, your pixel restrictions kept bandwidth down, or actually the thread doesn't get re-sized for everyone (who's using a full sized monitor), and then the file size limitations kept TORn bandwidth down. It made sense to me, at least. As long as your total was okay, width could be what I posted. So I read your reply again, and it even contradicts itself because your FAQ re-post says my width can be as much as 670, not just 525. Is that what you wanted? It would depend on the height according to the FAQ, as the total you multiplied came out less than 210,000. My image was calculated at roughly 203,000. So that shouldn't have been a problem. So I guess you want the width smaller for smart phones or something? I can't really speak to that. Rules are rules, but it's not as easy you think, using that photobucket website either. Calculating and cropping those pictures took time, finding the right artwork to superimpose, plus the little additions like golden ratio scale in the collage. Details, details. Look closer. That's my form of art, I'm a graphics hack of sorts. I take it, you mean "top of the forum", if we're going to look at typo details, eh. (Ok, now I'm being a little smart.) The screen capture stuff had been on my hard-drive for several few months, just something I noticed that's all. Had to find a Rankin-Bass picture to point it out, so "Smaug" was googled under an images search engine, and the original artwork came up in a public domain. I credited it, of course. Only fair to credit such nice work. I'd credit the tree-circle graphic, but it's lost to me. I think that it was found, googling the "flower of life" several months ago. Been seeing that flower of tree/life graphic around, even TV commercials by the way. It was part of my online research for the Egyptian Temple of Osirion and lunar alignments. I had seen a special on Ancient Aliens I believe, where the researchers had pointed out how intricately cut faces of the blocks used at that temple were unique of all the different Egyptian archeological sites, so it kicked off a run of late-night web research. The Flower of Life (laser cut) was added to the temple some time later. It should be noted according to Porphyry (233-c.305) Pythagoras possibly visited Osirion. But I'm digressing... Let's see here... ...that deleted picture is showing up as 653x312 in my Microsoft Window Paint program. 525x400? - - - When I visit the FAQ as you mentioned, the first link is Movie Board. - - - When I go to that link, the website is a forum thread, titled "Image Posting Guidelines". Here's what the first post says... version 2 Information on using images in a variety of forms is available at Torn Image Posting Guide - - - Under that outline (non-TORN related), there's a section... DISPLAYING IMAGES IN A POST This is what it says... Images Displayed in a Post Should be no larger than 670 pixels wide 210,000 pixels squared (width x height). For example, An image 670 pixels wide can be no higher than 313 pixels tall. 50 KB for each image and 250 KB total for all images within one post - - - I get 84kb for the deleted image, and 40 Kb for the one that's not deleted. No problem there either. So creepy as it may be, here's mother nature's picture re-sized in a collage of mine. Everyone should be able to see the full resolution at the link, hopefully, which is nicer to look via PJ's YouTube vid-blog, screen capture shot. Nice and big. I had no problems looking at it just now. Here's the thumbnail, shrunk 80%.
So what's inconsistent in the guidelines, as far as you can tell, entmaiden? I'd ask, because my reputation here, yea it's important to me, you're such nice people. I miss that around the internet these days. Never been a Twitter, Facebook, MySpace kind of person. Just like bulletin boards, myself. And now I'm exhausted, never get that hour back.

but I'll try to address a few things here. I'm not sure what the pixel dimensions or the kb size of your image was but if I'm reading your post right, it was 84kb which is too large. Your pixel dimensions (by my calculations were okay - more in a bit) The image has to meet both requirements. Not one or the other. So the 84kb would have gotten the image booted. I wrote the tutorial (we had a lot of people very confused about images in general). I have maximum of 50kb in my tutorial. because that's what the limit was when I wrote my tutorial. Practically, it was not actually 50 so I think they changed the FAQ but didn't tell me to change my tutorial. I *knew* it had to be lower than 50 because I'd run into problems. But with all I've got going.. I just didn't think to change the tutorial. I wrote it but I don't use it, if you get the difference. It kind of escapes my attention. I'll have to make a note to change it. As to pixel size. I was a bit surprised to find the FAQs read: the maximum size of any picture posted should be 525 wide x 400 pixels high (or a better measure is: 210,000 pixels squared - width x height), but no wider than 670 pixels. The maximum file size per picture should be 45k. The cumulative file size of all pictures in one post should not exceed 225k (5 pictures of the maximum filesize of 45k, 10 pictures of a filesize of 22.5k, etc.) The part in bold italics doesn't make sense. And I don't remember it being there when I wrote the tutorial. So I think that's changed. This either has to be explained to me to have it make sense or the wording has to be changed. Mods... if you declare this better suited for Feedback, please don't throw away this reply. I don't know how you can transport this subthread to Feedback but I'd hate to have it just deleted. Night Wolf and I have gone to too much trouble working out our thinking to have it deleted. :-) Night Wolf, I'd say, if you have more questions about image size, post them on Feedback. But really, your whole post (well, the part working out the image posting guideline) should be reposted on Feedback. There are things that need to be addressed by an admin and that's the proper forum (and they one they watch more carefully) for image posting guidelines. Gotta run. Late for work. :-)

is the size of the picture. Anything over 50k is too big, regardless of the dimensions. I apologize if our guidelines are confusing, and we'll take a look and make them more consistent. Your picture in your latest post is 54k, but in light of your honest efforts to comply, I'll let it go.

...about addressing the confusing parts. Mods and I, with Magpies' excellent\d guidelines in mind, will work to make it easier to understand.

Yep. I notice that limitation now. Sorry. MS Paint doesn't have an option to reduce the DPI down for desktop publishing to the internet. I'll need to find a better solution for the future.
