The Hobbit in 1D and 0 FPS...

Yes, The Hobbit in one dimension at a zero framerate. You can rewind, repeat, fast-forward, skip and hold. You can go as fast or as slowly through the story as you wish. You can even take a nap and start up where you left off. You can share it with friends and family or you can hoard it all to yourself. This technological wonder is called a book.

The Lord of the Hams: There is only one lord of the ham...and he does not share ham If this is indeed the ham of the council, Hamdor will fry it done. This is no rabble of mindless porks, these are Hamak-Hai: their steak is thick, and their bacon broad (courtesy of moreham and HamTheEast)

pages in all books have two dimensions - length and breadth. As it happens, I also have a 3 - dimensional copy of TH - it's a pop-up book, with pictures by John Howe. Right here.

.. because they always curve a bit when the book's open. Then there are all the dimensions they open in your mind... And no - I can't trump the pop-up version!

And is thought not a dimension in and of itself?

- does that mean a circle is one-dimensional? 'cos that's what I remember about maths at school - a circle consists of one line, as opposed to a triangle say, or a square. And, what about a sine wave? What does Euclid have to say about all this?

normally you are right but the moment you bend it, it covers an area while a line cant cover an area. To calculate the area you square the radius and multiply with pie, so the radius forms your two dimensions: Area = Pie x Radius(squared) Didnt know I would do maths today :) Any one else hungry for pie?

Anyway, like the surface of a page in a book, any projected image is still only 2D. It is only by a trick of the mind that a "3D" movie -- at any frame rate -- is perceived as 3 dimensional. For that matter film has always implied 3D (or space) by the simple fact of recording space. But the image remains 2D. (Which leads to my conclusion that the success of photographic media has always been based on our willingness to believe a lie. )

They're not infinitely thin – they've got thickness (albeit negligible) as well as length and width. Thanks for the link, by the way – I had no idea that Howe had created such detailed artwork of Smaug. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a similar design in the film.

Or maybe it satisfies our desire to be able to fold the world up and carry it around in our pockets...
(Which leads to my conclusion that the success of photographic media has always been based on our willingness to believe a lie. ) Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

The pages in all of my books are at least two-dimensional (three, if they are pop-up).
