Is Bolg, Son of Azog, In The Hobbit? Can't Post

Ever since the major casting announcements for The Hobbit were rounded up with the casting of Dain, speculation has been rife on our boards (beware of spoilers!) that the films will see the character of Bolg be replaced by that of Azog (played by Conan Stevens).

However, Ringer Spy Iain today alerted us to a listing of upcoming Hobbit collectibles over at BigBadToyStore.com, and we noticed a few interesting characters listed there such as "Fumbul (Orc) with Worg", "Grinnah", and "Bolg with Gandalf".

Is this confirmation that Bolg will indeed appear in the films, even if as a minor character? What think you!?

Join the speculation on our boards.

Even if if Bolg will only be a minor character [In reply to] Can't Post

This pretty much confirms, for me, that he will appear/be seen in the films. After all, we didn't get any Bombadil and Barrow-wight figures did we! Seems promising!

i agree [In reply to] Can't Post

and i am very happy that the character will be translated from the books to the movies, though now we have a better idea that he will be in the film, what do people think he will be like? as he was in the books but CGI or have a smaller role, but what?

I for one am pleased [In reply to] Can't Post

I was one of the people that wasn't particularly bothered if Azog and Bolg were combined, but preferred and would always argue that they shouldn't be.

As for what he will look like. Not a clue?! Any suggestions?

Good news!

I'm guessing Fumbul might be the leader of the goblins chasing the company?

Orcs or Goblins? [In reply to] Can't Post

Its been a while since I have read TH and since I am currently working my way through the Silmarillion it will be a while before I get to it again. Can someone tell me if the refer to Orcs as Goblins the whole time in the book and if so, will that make a difference in what the script writers do with dialogue. I know that they switch back and forth a couple of times in LOTR as they are obviously the same creature, though possibly a smaller subspecies.

Maybe this deserves another thread, idk.

Just a thought [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe we haven't had a casting announcement regarding Bolg as he will be totally CGI, and have no speaking part? May make sense? Hmmm.....

Some more hints: [In reply to] Can't Post

  • Will the line skew more towards kids or collectors? As a line that will be available at mass market retailers, of course there will be product oriented at kids. But as a whole, the line will appeal to the collector segment.
  • Four or six-inch scale? Both!
  • Sculpt detail, paint, articulation consistent with Toy Biz’s LOTR line? Lots of head nodding.
  • Shelf dates? Expect toys to hit shelves as soon as October, but in force for the holidays – late November and December.
  • They expect a strong lead-in from Lego, who will have LOTR Legos on shelves this summer and Hobbit Legos hitting the same time as Bridge’s Hobbit toys.

Maybe Conan Stevens will play both Dennis Azog and Bolg? [In reply to] Can't Post

Just like Lawrence Makoare played both Lurtz and Gothmog. I wasn't active on these boards when the casting news for the LOTR-films came... is there anyone who can remember if Lawrence Makoare was announced to play several characters, just one of them or if his characters weren't announced at all?

Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

Actually, Fimbul (if I recall rightly) is Tolkien's name for an Orc... [In reply to] Can't Post

... or was it Fimbulfambi who, in the original manuscripts of The Hobbit, was the character that got replaced by Thorin!?

I'm not certain... but I'm sure I've read something like "Fimbul" in a Tolkien book Smile

Golfimbul was mentioned in the hobbit, chapter, unexpected party. he was the orc cheftain of mount gram and bandobras took knocked golfimbul's head off with a club and it flew through the air and went into a rabbit hole and that is how golf was invented, lol.

then maybe the actor playing azog will also play bolg, rather than bolg be CGI? [In reply to] Can't Post

This would make sense as they obviously are heavily caked in prosthetics and you wouldnt be able to say, oh thats the same actor, especially if they are meant to be father and son characters.

I hope this is true and they are not just making bolg for the toy market to confuse us, haha.

Makes sense to play two [In reply to] Can't Post

they used the same guy in LOTR over and over again to play several of the baddies. the Witch King, was the guy who played captain of the Uruk Hai and a couple others. he was a big dude they had on set so they used him. Conan Stevens needs all the exposure he can get so I'm sure he is willing to jump at anything they want him to do.

I really doubt they would make a minor character just for the toy market - like I said above, we didn't get Bombadil or Barrow-wight toys (official made) despite appearing in the books

I suspect that "Grinnah" is also a typo [In reply to] Can't Post

and we'll be getting a baby Grima in TH! Hooray! Tongue My guess - he's the son of Stephen Fry. Hopefully, Bard and the Master's kids will be arch-enemies.

Awesome to see early info on TH merchandise start to emerge...Every day Frodo moves closer to Mordor (and we move closer to December).

Interesting to hear that other than Thorin, the only Dwarves set for release thus far are Dwalin, Kili, and Fili...along with the bust of Dwalin previously announced, surely this means these are three of the "major" Dwarven characters. Also, we've just gotten two of the "hero" Orc characters revealed, probably similar to Lurtz/Grishnahk/Sharku/Gorbag/Shagrat - Fimbul and Grinnah. I agree Fimbul is derivative of Golfimbul - or perhaps it's a nickname? Shocked

And yep...seems Bolg is in after all.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
    5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
    4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
    3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
    2. Use not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, with axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
    1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

OME!!! (Oh My Eru) this is awesome news!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

absolutely brilliant. LOL @ spelling of Worg too...

One thing I've been wondering is, does Bolg even -say- anything in the book??

anyway, this is great.......although, the alternative explanation for this is that they'll just use the name of Bolg for a generic general-like character of the Norhtern Orcs, akin to Gothmog from RotK
    ....
    possible explanation do you think??

    Great nevertheless......

Although, what if the toy makers have confused Bolg with Azog??? (just to throw that in there lolol) Wink

I just dont want to be all happy the character is in and then realize its not the case. I just looked up the actor conan stevens, he is so damn tall! pretty big guy aswell, lol. I also didnt realise he was in game of thrones as gregor clegane (the mountain) was badass in that!

I dont know why really as its a movie and shouldnt matter that much but i could never understand why they would not have bolg as a character in the film, just doesnt make sense to me, so im happy he now is.

You might even be able to get a bolg sword to add to your collection :P
