Filming locations mentioned in Production Video #6 Can't Post

Watched for the filming locations mentioned in the video. Plenty of new information since the last topic. Attaching links to Google Maps. Comparing with locations from the first three movies, Mr Jackson gets much use out of one general area - Paradise, New Zealand, for instance.

Street View in Google Maps often notes the date of the image in the very lower left hand corner of the image. Google Earth usually has the date of an image in the lower left hand corner too. For instance, the aerial image of Hobbiton is from 29 April 2010. I would suspect the site is being prepared and groomed well in advance of filming.

Hobbiton, Matamata, New Zealand

Mangaotaki/Denize Bluffs, New Zealand

Turoa Ski Area, Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand Mr Jackson has made good use of this little stream. Cool

Strath Taieri, Middlemarch, New Zealand

Rock and Pillar Range, Otago, New Zealand

Earnslaw Burn, Glenorchy, New Zealand

Earnslaw Burn Track takes one to impressive views of Mt Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi. For instance, this on Travel Channel's website: http://www.travelchannel.com/...estic-alpine-scenery

(Treble Cone) Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Rd, Wanaka, New Zealand

Paradise, New Zealand Mr Jackson has made very good use of this area! Cool

Eweburn Station, Te Anau, New Zealand

Braemar Station, Tekapo, New Zealand

Pelorus Bridge, New Zealand

Corrections are welcome! :-)

Edit: Curiously, I had noticed, what filming location is not mentioned. Harwoods Hole at Canaan Downs. Home of Smaug?

As an aside, in another topic, I noticed the comments about movie sets visible in Google Maps and Google Earth. Once a person knows the date the image was taken, it can be surmised sometimes what is being filmed. This could be a time consuming hobby.

Sets visible from the Narnia movies:
Concrete pad that supported the Dawn Treader: http://maps.google.com/...00470922fee6b781b340
Set for the Telmarine castle in Prince Caspian: http://maps.google.com/...00472d50cf7a02de8cda

Excellent job! [In reply to] Can't Post

Earnslaw Burn is especially gorgeous on Google Earth. It seems some very detailed photography of the area has been done by Google. Possibly assisted by PJ and company!

Thanks. I agree that it looks great on GE [In reply to] Can't Post

It almost seems to be unusually good resolution for Google Earth. Was someone making sure close attention was given to this place? Image was taken on 8 January 2011.

Saw the first few pictures of the place. Found it jaw-dropping.

Indeed. It makes me wonder. Interested to see how it shows up in the movie. :D

Thank you very much! [In reply to] Can't Post

It was lovely to go walkabout with my little googly man and pretend I was actually there! Cheaper than paying for a flight from London, LOL!

Oh Wow! I was thinking of you :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Wondering if you were going to update your work... but to do it so fast is AMAZING! You are a genius! Did you know that!? :D

This past vlog is my favourite so far! LOCATIONS and DWARVES! *squeeeeeee*
*flying-tackle hug* This is AWESOME! Thank you!!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Genius? Blush Very happy to know you appreciate this kind of thing.

I do love maps and geography to the point of distraction, and this serves me well at work. Thought it would take me a little longer to make the updates. Continuing to work on the maps for FOTR, TT, and ROTK.

Will likely continue to provide tweaks to the locations to improve accuracy. When The Hobbit arrives in theaters, I will likely arrange the pinned locations to order of appearance in the movie; meaning I will be taking notes *adjusts nerd glasses*

To Shirehorse ... Indeed. Way cheaper than booking a flight. Provides me a chance to have that virtual tour and share it with others that are in the same boat I am. Cool

*smile spreads* This is the wonderful thing about TORn [In reply to] Can't Post

What you're doing... right here... that brightens my day and makes it so special here. We have an outlet for things that just plain makes us happy! You're so good at this, Arwen's daughter is wonderful with costumes, Magpie's passion for the music, RoseCotton's transcripts,The Reading Room is packed with brilliant observations and knowledge, the artwork, the collectors... the pure joy and fun we have here is brilliant and so inspiring!

Your maps and the work you put into them... incredible... and sets my geek-o-meter off like crazy!

Thank you so much :)

great work [In reply to] Can't Post

and I always appreciate another obsessive, collecting personality. :-)

In regards to being able to see *anything* movie related in Google Maps (or Earth... if there is any difference)... might I suggest that people take screenshots since those views won't be available long term.

Again, think 5 years down the road for history archive purposes. It's always a little disappointing or dismaying for me to follow a line from 10 years ago only to find the source missing or altered since then such that the original revelation is gone.

GRAB anything you think will be gone in the future. Please. We can always throw it out later but we might never find it again if it goes missing.
