Announcing The Middle-earth March Madness Tournament! Can't Post

In the US, tournament frenzy hits every March with the onset of the NCAA's Men's Basketball March Madness tournament. We thought this year would be a good opportunity for the entire Tolkien community to participate in a special tournament of our own. So without further delay we are announcing the Middle-earth Madness Tournament! The goal is to settle, once and for all, which character is favored most by Tolkien fans worldwide. To start off the process, the staff at TheOneRing.net compiled a list of 46 finalists. We need to weed this list down to 32 total contestants. To do that, we are going to ask you to vote for up to three characters in the poll below. Voting will be open until Feb 29th at Noon ET. We will then compile the results and create our tournament bracket with seeding based on total votes. It should be noted, much like the men's basketball tournament in, our Middle-earth Madness selection committee does reserve the right to adjust results a bit in the spirit of competition. (and like the men's basketball committee, some of the decisions are sure to be controversial!!) So without further delay, let the voting begin!

Don't forget to share this poll with your friends and family - especially if you want one particular character to win!

no Durin?
Thrain?
Aredhel?
Eol?

Unsure

"I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me!"

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,

"Thorin sat up with a start. 'Something is not right,' he muttered to himself as he stood up and looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"

Bit of an odd list, no?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Barrow-wight rather than the sons of Feanor? And there is Aragorn or Aragorn as Strider, but no Smeagol or Smeagol as Gollum?

Your kidding right?! [In reply to] Can't Post

How does Gandalf beat frodo by 5%?! And I'm surprised that Sam beats him by 2%, so far anyway. Not as surprised as Aragon being listed twice, but I understand why. GO FRODO! AND SAM! AND ARAGORN AS STRIDER!
AND PIPPIN... Why can we only vote for 3?!

I can't participate [In reply to] Can't Post

... since all of my favorite characters got cut in favor of 'Barrow-Wight.'

For the record, that's a THING, not a character.

Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor?

Turgon, King of Gondolin?

Ecthelion, Slayer of Gothmog?

Hurin the Steadfast?

MORGOTH, for pete's sake!?

... but Barrow-Wight makes it in?

Agreed, But [In reply to] Can't Post

Aragorn & Gandalf TWICE?

Crazy

Plus Rhadaghast & Farmer Maggot? Unsure

While Turin, the star of one of Tolkien's major works gets the shaft?

along with Morgoth?

And Fingolfin, Fingon & Maedhros?

I don't get it....

I'm surprised Fatty Bolger isn't on there instead of Thingol. Wink

And Saron's not even going to make the final cut. Mad

You can't have Carcharoth or even Smaug without including Glaurung, one of the greatest nemesis of the free people's of Middle Earth in the First Age.

For spelling & still didn't spell Radagast properly! Cool

BTW: how does Radagast get twice the votes that Saruman gets?

Oh, it must be because Saruman is on there twice...

Once as Saruman the White...

And once as 'Sharkey'. Wink

..The land of long-forgotten name:
......no man may ever anchor near;
..No steering star his hope may aim,
......for nether Night its marches drear,
..And waters wide no sail may tame,
......with shores encircled dark and sheer.

..O! Haven where my heart would be!
......the waves beat upon thy bar
..For ever echo endlessly,
......when longing leads thy thought afar

Possible explanation for lack of Sil characters? [In reply to] Can't Post

It looks to me like the creators of the poll skewed it to appeal to a more casual fan of Middle Earth, perhaps to make it more appealing to those who haven't taken the plunge into the Sil. If you have more of the esoteric characters listed, only us geeks would appreciate them, and all casual fans' votes would go to Frodo, Sam and Bilbo. It may end up like that anyway, though. And calling Carcaroth the "Werewolf of Middle Earth" seems like a subtle ploy specifically to appeal to the Twilight crowd. (There's a Conspiracy for you, Ataahua!)

Personally, I'd vote for Ancalagon the Black. Cool

And suddenly the Tornadoes saw afar off a greenlight, as it were a cloud with a living heart of flame;
and they knew that this was no vision only, but that PJ had made a new thing: The Hobbit, the Film that Is.

We can vote as much as want, right? [In reply to] Can't Post

Checking. From TORN's Facebook:

Nearly 6000 votes on our Middle-earth Madness Tournament in just a day! We've read quite a few of your comments and decided to make two adjustments. First, voting is now not limited by IP address - so basically you can vote as often as you want! (Some folks where having problems) And second, we've added a few more options just in the off chance the not-so-well-known characters can make it into the round of 32. Check out our wall for the link to the tournament and voting, and of course, share with your friends!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

(I wanna be an Elven Ranger, I wanna live a live of danger....)

Steadfast buddy to a human with issues (Turin), shows up in the dead of winter with a huge pack full of goodies for the "outlaws"(thus instigating the Father Christmas legend), guarded the marches of Doriath for eons, then gets himself killed because he won't give up on the Stupid Human (Sacrificial Hero)... oh, and he talks to animals...very cool.

this guy deserves some votes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
