''It's been called that before, but not by you...'' Can't Post

Have always been wondering about this statement of Gandalf. He says it to Bilbo about the ring. How could he know? He and Aragorn hadn't captured Gollum yet, right?

Or did Bilbo perhaps tell Gandalf that Gollum called the ring his precious?

In the book [In reply to] Can't Post

we are told that Bilbo had already written up the story of his adventures (what we know as The Hobbit), and both Frodo and Gandalf have read it. In the film, we don't know whether Bilbo has written anything yet (we see him start writing "Concerning Hobbits", which is the Prologue of LotR), but we have to assume that he's told the story to quite a few people - Frodo knows about Gollum already, Sam knows about the trolls. And we see Bilbo telling the next generation of kids about the trolls too, at the party.

So yes, I'd say we have to assume that Bilbo's tale is already known to Gandalf and to a number of hobbits. I wouldn't be at all surprised either if Gandalf has got a lot more details out of Bilbo than anyone else has - after all, he had plenty of opportunity to get Bilbo's story out of him on the way home from the Lonely Mountain, while it was still fresh in his mind.

They went in, and Sam shut the door.
But even as he did so, he heard suddenly,
deep and unstilled,
the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth.

Gandy may have been vaguely familiar with Isildur's writings already [In reply to] Can't Post

... in which he calls the One 'Precious'. Or Strider may have run in to Gollum or overheard him and related that story a bit also... but that doesn't fit too well without some more of the Professor's famous RetConning his own works :)

Precioussssss [In reply to] Can't Post

In appendix b of LOTR it states that the search for Gollum only started after Bilbo left the Shire and Gandalf did not read the scroll of Isildur for another 16 years. In the prologue to LOTR section 4 Of the Finding of the Ring it does say that Gandalf eventually got the true tale of Bilbo's encounter with Gollum out of Bilbo so it is reasonable to assume this this eould have included Gollum calling it his precious.
