Hi, Mostly on here I see events happening all over the U.S, but not so many for London! Any other Ringers in this city that have regualr meet ups? Or want to start them?!

and certainly couldn't do regular meet-ups, but if something huge gets going to celebrate the Hobbit premiere/release; I may well find my way down!

The Tolkien Society has a group based in London and the Home Counties. it's called Northfarthing, and meets twice a month; the first meeting is held on the first Saturday of the month in a pub called The Penderell Oak in Holborn from 7pm onwards (sorry; too late for this evening's Innmoot - I've only just noticed your post). The second monthly meeting - the Smialmoot - is held on the teenth Sunday in the month, at the home of one or other of the smial members. The next one will be on the 19th Feb. I say 'meetings' - actually, these are very informal get-togethers with friends, to chat and _sometimes_ 'talk Tolkien'! I jest - though there have been times when I've had to not-so-gently steer the conversation back to talk of the Professor and all that. Do let me know if you'd like to know more (though I'm afraid I can't let anyone have details of the next smialmoot 'over the air' as it were - these are held at members' homes, as I've just said). But I'd be happy to help with questions; and feel free to check out the Tolkien Society's webpage, here - http://www.tolkiensociety.org/

Ah, thanks for that information! I shall have a look at the webpage. So how big is the Northfarthing group? And do you have to be a member of the Tolkien Society to attend? You say you chat about the Professor- i'll be honest, I'm more interested in talking about the films and the books! :) But I'm pleased to hear that there are meet ups going on, perhaps I can come to the pub next time! Out of interest, what age range are the members?

- well the Northfarthing smial is the oldest in the TS. I joined it a matter of thirty years ago, and many of the folk I met then still come along to the moots, There are younger folk, of course - some in their twenties! There's usually around six-twelve people at a pubmoot I guess - though actually I haven't been to one of those for a while - I find driving in London a bit too frenetic these days. I do like to get along to a smialmoot when I can. When I say 'chat about the professor' I mean 'Tolkien and all that' - that is, everything and anything to do with Tolkien, the books (and the movies too - there are pJ fans in the TS). And no; you don't have to be a member to attend. A few of us are also members of another website; it's called LotR Plaza. We've a meeting planned in Oxford on Feb. 18th (weather permitting). I'm hoping we can get along to the latest exhibition at the Bodleian; there's a manuscript page of Lord of the Rings on show, as well as many other wonderful things: http://medievalromance.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/romance-romance-and-the-modern-world (I hope it's okay to mention another website here)

But how often is there a tenth Sunday in a month? Do you mean every 10 Sundays?

- 'teenth. That is, the Sunday which has a 'teenth' in the date; eg. this month the smial is taking place on Sunday the nineteenth Feb. I suppose the idea is to keep a couple of weeks between moots; it seems to work ok. As it happens, no-one is available to host the smialmoot at their home this month, so it's going to take place at the penderel Oak. I think they meet at around 3pm; I can check if you like. I shan't be going; traffic. brrrr...

Hi, I'm new to London and went by the Penderel Oak today and could seem to locate the moot. Does it still happen the first sat of every month at 7pm? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Hannah
