Denethor's Lament, a tribute Can't Post

DENETHOR’S LAMENT
(Kansas, Carry on Wayward Son*)

Carry on my wayward son,
Then home please, when you are done.
When you’re here, you’ll head the rest
Who defy Mordor.

Had a dream, declared my son being woken,
Heard a voice: Seek for the sword that was broken,
There shall be counsels taken
Of the Doom near at hand,

In Imladris there it dwells,
it had spoken,
You’ll be shown stronger than spells there a token,
For Isildur’s Bane shall awaken,
And the Halfling forth shall stand!

Carry on my wayward son,
Then home please, when you are done.
When you’re here, you’ll head the rest
Who defy Mordor.

Masquerading that I rule with a reason,
My charade will spell our autumnal season,
Though I look to be a wise man, well
There is something they don’t know….

I’m a stormy sea of moving emotion,
Son was borne upon a boat to the ocean,
The cloven horn of his misfortune
In my hands, as though to say

Carry on, your wayward son
Will have peace when you are done.
While you’re here, you’ll head the rest
Who defy Mordor.
NO!

Carry on, I will always remember!
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor!
The center lights up from my palantír...
Son, your mother waits for you.

Carry on, your wayward son
Will have peace when you are done.
While you’re here, you’ll head the rest
Who defy (who defy Mordor).

This is dedicated to Master Bob Anderson, who has passed into legend, his splendor unequaled.

Wayward son indeed! [In reply to] Can't Post

Great selection for Boromir, this really suits him! Smile And the "tempo" of the dream's words, as well.

Thanks! Cool

thank you dernwyn! and some thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

i had been trying to think of something fitting for Boromir's (and Faramir's) dream--and for Denethor's grief & descent into madness also-- for a while now. if it weren't for the melancholic mood i was in when writing it, it would have been a happy discovery. as of now, i can say i'm happy to have discovered it, thanks for mentioning it. Smile

i found that the song fit so well, both the tempo/meter and much of the content, that it was almost as though the writer meant it that way (almost). For an example, the "NO!" after the third chorus fit just right, almost as though it were "meant" to be felt/spoken by someone like Denethor. It makes me wonder if the songwriter meant something similar by the original lyrics (it's hard to tell from the original lyrics that it was supposed to be about death. i find it ambiguous) and it prompts me to look at the song in a new light. (this has happened with me often, upon writing a parody.)

As for the dream, i wonder what was the significance that both brothers ended up getting the same prophetic dream. and why them? if it was because of their lineage, why didn't Denethor get the dream too (or maybe he did and he just never said so)? or others who share lineage, like perhaps Imrahil of Dol Amroth? was there some precedent, within their family line, for such prophetic dreams? something inherited from mother Finduilas perhaps? i don't remember from the books what the answer should be.

and, you're welcome, it's my pleasure! thanks again Smile

Poor Denethor. Poor Boromir. Very appropriate choice.

Many thanks Lissuin [In reply to] Can't Post

I enjoyed writing it, even though I was in a sorrowful mood at the time.

Had a dream, declared my son being woken,
Heard a voice: Seek for the sword that was broken,

Of the Doom near at hand,

In Imladris there it dwells,

You’ll be shown stronger than spells there a token,

And the Halfling forth shall stand!

Carry on my wayward son,
Then home please, when you are done.
When you’re here, you’ll head the rest
Who defy Mordor.
