As a kiwi, it is a pleasure to read Sir Ian's kind and thoughtful words about his time touring NZ.
I can also confirm that the country is looking a picture at this time of year - much lushness and Spring flush. A perfect time for the production to be outdoors doing its thing!

I also enjoyed reading such a beautiful description of the Kiwi countryside and the comparisons he has made with England. However beautiful, England would not have done for Middle-earth: it's now too orderly and managed. Much of NZ is England as it was before the Industrial Revolution and I applaud PJ's decision to shoot there.

The other day it was drizzling but we carried on filming, as the 3D cameras couldn’t register the rain. A pity. Rain in a 3D movie would be outstanding, in every way.
3D cameras don't register rain? If that's the case, isn't it safe to say that 3D is not quite ready for primetime?

For example, PD3 When Peter is outside the studio it is raining, but you can only tell because a few drops hit the lens. In Singing in the Rain they actually used milk for the rain so that the cameras would pick it up...

I wasn't aware of that. McKellen singled out 3D cameras as not being able to pick up rain, so I just assumed they were different.

is only 1400 metres high. (And that'sin Scotland, LOL!) But, what's your point? I've already said I am glad that it was filmed in NZ. And, anyway, does Tolkien say how high his mountains are? And even if he does and it's 3000 metres, then you're not allowing for poetic licence. And although the Shire is set in the Oxford area, you get the feeling from what Tolkien said that some areas of Middle-earth are not set in England. I expect the experts can enlighten us there.

Being an "all-northern" movie, as opposed to LOTR, which went south for much of the time, would have been more appropriately shot in Northern Europe. But it's the least of my concerns. As long as they seek alpine altitudes, which it seems they are, it should be okay...

I think NZ is just perfectly right for the movies, it has got nearly every kind of landscape.
For the northern Regions of middle-eart as well.
While the northern Island is quite subtropical, the southern Island is more similar to central/north-european weather, differing here as well. The southern Island is pretty much cut from North to south by big mountains. The main winds there come from the west so that the clouds loose al lot of their down-fall west of the mountains which leads to very rich fauna. Furthermore on the east side of the Southern Island i think you can find a lot of plains and much rougher land since, there is not that much rain. It is quite usual that they have good snowrates in Winter on the South-Island, especially in the mountains they are quite high.
