The entire build-up in LOTR is to the climax when Gollum pulls Frodo's finger. / [In reply to] Can't Post

******************************************
Brother will fight brother and both be his slayer,
brother and sister will violate all bonds of kinship;
hard it will be in the world, there will be much failure of honor,
an age of axes, an age of swords, where shields are shattered,
an age of winds, an age of wolves, where the world comes crashing down;
no man will spare another.

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Pull on this one [In reply to] Can't Post

The tension builds
From hill to dell
One scarcely knows
When to inhale.

From misty fen
To gaseous Mount
The pressure soon
Surpasses count.

In crack of Doom
Twixt walls of stone
Finger and Ring
Extend alone.

A precious friend
Must play his part
With plosive end
That rhymes with Art.

All this talk of farts [In reply to] Can't Post

- reminds me of a letter I saw for sale once, in a Sotheby's catalogue. It's from Tolkien to his doctor and his wife (the doctor's wife, not Tolkien's wife), and at the end Tolkien notes an old harbinger of Spring was 'When herte sterteth and bulloc verteth'; that is, 'When hart leaps up and bullock farts'.

The old ones are the best.

Four letter words [In reply to] Can't Post

- of course, academics could take what Tolkien called an 'unblushing' attitude to this sort of thing - Tolkien's mate CS Lewis wrote a paper called 'Four-Letter Words' around the time of the 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' trial, in which he looked at their origins and uses throughout the ages .

Opened my eyes, I can tell you!

"Buy the farting horse and hire the farting man." [In reply to] Can't Post

An old saying, probably known to Tolkien's generation.

The doctor who told it was right up there in age so I assume the saying borders on ancient! Angelic
