are you being serious Gramma? I don't think I've laughed at anything in the Tolkien universe quite so much as this song. And not laughter in a good way.

because it always brings me to tears, but so does Billy's. And what about Emiliana Torriniem's Gollum's Song? I didn't care for it at first but it's certainly grown on me.

Love Enya, certainly. She is unique, imho, and perfect for the movie songs of Arwen. Annie Lennox's "Into the West" is wonderful, too. I cry at that. I am very fond of the lovely "Passing of the Elves" in the complete recording. The group that sings that is Plan 9, isn't it? Nice question. hob

I should have mentioned Billy's song too. Emotionally, that song packs quite a punch. Well, so much about the music from the movies is special. I never tire of listening to it. I dunno why. hob

Aniron is pretty, but when I think of vocal sections of the score that I really love, it's not one that immediately comes to mind. I didn't even download May It Be, Gollum's Song, or Into the West onto my player, so I can pretend they don't exist. Billy Boyd has a very pleasant voice, so The Edge of Night is not bad. I barely remember Arwen's Song, since it's on the ROTK extended version, which I never have watched all the way through. I seem to recall, however, being impressed by Liv's singing, as well. (I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Complete ROTK Soundtrack!!!) Viggo's Return of the King song is better than his swamp song, but I don't really like either of them. I've never heard the Conchords song. I'm assuming the Mr. Spock selection is just facetiousness. My favorite LOTR song is probably Haldir's Lament.

Although I'm an aberration in that I like Gollum's Song (and I quite dislike Arwen's Song). I like Sissel's Song, heard at the end of the EE Fan Credits very much. (This was apparently bumped by Arwen's Song and I have to believe it was not Howard's choice to do so. *grumble*) but that segues quickly into Bilbo's Song which is even more beautiful. If I could declare the two as one song I would. If I have to choose, I would choose Bilbo's Song... it's a little longer. But someone on the old boards said this about Sissel's Song: When I first heard this upon viewing the ROTK EE, I felt stunned. It is hauntingly beautiful. Sadly, I do not possess a musical bone in my body, but I know spiritually uplifting music when I hear it, and this almost makes me want to drop to my knees. A'amel

On the ROTK EE? Shall have to cue that up. I got to hear Sissel when they did the LOTR concert in Seattle. Liked her so much I bought a CD of hers - which I did not like, it was just a bunch of ordinary songs that did nothing to showcase what she can do. One can't buy a recording of Renee Fleming singing like she sang for Shore either. I quite like Gollum's song too. I like the raw emotionality of Emiliana's voice.

It is hauntingly beautiful in a totally different manner than, say, May it Be. One is utter sadness, the other is hope.

Gollum's Song, Sissel's Song & Bilbo's Song

I wrote this about Gollum's Song on my website:
In TTT, we get the snaky Gollum's Song. Ohh... I grew to appreciate this song, the way Emiliana Torrini's voice changed from Slinker to Stinker... and that echo when she sings the line, "And you will weep, when you face the end alone." It's menacing in such a subtle way. The menace of something that may look pathetic and pitiable but contains hidden resentment and resolve.
Doug Adams wrote, along the same vein:
The Two Towers concludes with “Gollum's Song.” The melody line is a further exploration of the Pity of Gollum harmonies, here set in a more conclusive vein. Like the Pity of Gollum it is built off gnarling rises through distantly related minor chords, though here the lines are more step-wise—less pitiful and more collected in purpose. It's placed as the perfect cliffhanger for the second score—a moody recollection of Gollum's state as he threateningly promises to deliver the hobbits to “her.” There just seems so much subtlety hidden in this song and I can really relate how that song makes me feel and think to what I feel and think about book events. I think Emiliano's voice is perfectly suited to the task given her and I felt she understood Gollum and what Shore was attempting to do in representing Gollum. IMO, May it Be and Into the West were produced for wide consumption. The intention was for people who hadn't even seen the movie or read the book to respond to these songs. (And I think they did.) But second to that was the wish to represent the movie or the book. I think May it Be wanders around LOTR concepts without ever lighting on any. Now I LOVE Enya. And I very much like the song. But it just fails to satisfy either separate from the movies or connected to the movies in terms of content. Into the West. I first didn't like it, then I did. In the end, as a song distinct from the movie, I like it. Probably like it a lot. But in terms of connecting with the movie, I felt it served some personal wishes and needs of the writers/producers more than it served the needs of the movie/story itself. I understand this and accept it but, in the end, the song falls short (for me) of being a successful conclusion to the movie (ROTK) or the trilogy. Gollum's Song doesn't fall short. I think Shore kept the music direction focused on the needs of the movie. It does work completely for me in that way. I'm pretty comfortable with people having differing viewpoints, especially with something so subjective as 'like/don't like'. But I'm always baffled with people who say they hate Gollum's Song. Not that I fault their opinion... only that I marvel that they aren't responding to something that I so appreciate. RE: Sissel's Song & Bilbo's Song: Since this music is not available commercially (yet) and since most of my contacts own the DVDs (where the music is available), I feel fairly comfortable sharing the audio clips I've taken from the dvd. Go HERE to find them.

A catchy ditty from “The Hobbit” musical. I went to a community theatre production a friend of mine directed a few years ago. The cute little goblins stole the show! Otherwise, there’s not much “Tolkien” music that moves me. Not even the soundtrack from the Jackson production, really. It has all the boring hallmarks of long-winded 19th Century symphonic music with some of the more irritating aspects of the 20th. (The styles of the pop songs during the closing credits are even more jarring for me.) It’s inappropriate to this other reality, whether you think of Middle-earth as a separate universe from ours or from some pre-historic time. The trouble is I can’t imagine what would be appropriate. Not “Celtic” music because I believe that’s just a modern interpretation of a time period that doesn’t correspond with Middle-earth, either. Sometimes classical music works in movies about other periods, though. Henry V (Branagh version) comes to mind. Not sure why.

several years in a row. I read the words out loud to the congregation, and said it could easily be a Christmas carol: "May it be an evening star shines down on you...you walk a lonely road, so far you are from home...when the night is overcome, you may rise to find the sun..." (Our minister is a big LotR book-fan; it took him a while to get up the courage to see the movies, because he was afraid they'd harm his enjoyment of the books somehow, but he did end up enjoying the movies after all.)

I voted for "Where there's a whip, there's a way." Long years ago, my brothers and I used to march around the house chanting this song while whipping each other with towels! (I guess you had to have been there.) Ah, those were the days.... But you left out "Ramble On" and "The Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin, two great Tolkien-influenced tracks! 'Twas in the darkest depts of Mordor I met a girl so fair But Gollum and the Evil One crept up and slipped away with her ...
