Drone Camera being used for The Hobbit Can't Post

When you think of The Lord of the Rings films, you can't help but remember the sweeping landscape shots - filmed using expert coordination of helicopters across the rugged New Zealand landscape. Well, now, thanks to some new technology, Peter Jackson is saving some fuel by dumping the helicopter and using a newly developed 'drone' camera setup. Called the OM-Copter, the eight-blade device allows for smooth and stable flight. Thanks to Ringer Kookie for sending us a link to Geek.com where you can learn all about this new tech! [Read More]

Peter's got a new toy!! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

OMG... He used to have fun with a pencil camera when working with the miniatures and more fun with the optics for motion capture. Can you imagine him with a drone helicopter!!! I'd LOVE to be a fly on the wall when he's at the controls of that one!!

AWESOME!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Let's hope the drone shots don't end up looking like the end of the "Father Ted" opening:

There is no way the Red Epics in a 3D configuration could be on a drone dealy. You'd need a helicopter. Laugh

"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

Oh sure, but ask a simple question about the green tint, and Peter is nowhere to be found.

Too bad, actually. [In reply to] Can't Post

It looks like a cool device, suitable for lots of filming chores, though the Red Epics would present rather a challenge.

Someone in Oz has developed one that's akin to a bicycle, but with the two wheels placed horizontally - a motorcycle version of a jetpack, really.

Nice gadget [In reply to] Can't Post

I like the sense of momentum it gives us whenever it turns or changes direction – it just drifts about like it's caught in the wind. I'd be interested to see a film that makes use of this camera in any substantial way.

I hope he stays on the ground for the most part... [In reply to] Can't Post

The best perspective for an epic landscape is from the ground - mountains towering above, rolling hills stretching out before you, etc. I thought there were only a handful of successful aerial shots in LOTRO, including the beacons scene. Some of the worst were in FOTR and TTT, particularly over Anduin and the plains of Rohan during the orc chase (there's one where the camera flies awkwardly, very quickly and at a tilt over the orc band, and you can't help but think that should have been left on the cutting room floor).

How are Red Epics challanging? [In reply to] Can't Post

why would Epic present a challange? IMHO those cameras are the smallest you can get in this type of configuration.
Basically a nuclear reactor the size of a matchbox Tongue
I think you are referring to the Epics shooting in a stereo-setup. Yes, that might be a bit trickier but i dont see the need to use two cameras for something like an aerial shot, where the cameras are just inches apart. The parallax is just too small for it to make a difference. 3D conversion in post might be a better option.
