Evangeline Lilly talks Hobbit with SFX

Thanks to Ringer Kookie for pointing us to a great interview with Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel in The Hobbit) from SFX. In the interview, Lilly talks about her time commitments, learning elvish, archery, swordplay, and just how long she's been a Tolkien fan.
When you played Kate you were always doing physical scenes and stunts. How are you prepping for The Hobbit? “With every film, you have to educate yourself on the material and it’s often things you don’t know a lot about. Right now I’m studying Elvish and having conversations with people about learning how to be an archer, a swordsperson and how to fight like an elf instead of a gritty convict.” [Laughs] Did you have any reservations about joining The Hobbit cast? “With The Hobbit, it was a no-brainer because I have been a fan of those books since I was 13-years-old.” Check out the rest of the interview at the SFX Website. She didn't even want to go to see LOTR wow. Such a purist. I didn't know she is such a huge fan of Tolkien. This interview has changed my opinion about her. But I'm still afraid about this additional character. I would prefer if her role was different than of a warrior. Still wondering who is Tauriel's love interest.

Tauriel=someone's D&D character?

I'm probably just being nitpicky, but the name Tauriel just sounds like someone's character from a roleplaying game. I was also thinking about this, and how Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan (fresh out of LOTR) hooked up on the set of Lost, and now she's going to be in the Hobbit movie. I'm not trying to imply anything. I just think it is interesting, and kinda cool. I like Evangeline Lilly. I got a bit bored by her Lost character in the last season or two, but I've liked interviews and behind the scenes stuff with her, and she comes off fairly smart to me. I am worried about this added character, but I'm sure she'll do fine in the role if it isn't too distracting seeing Kate with pointy ears.

Goblins? Forces of the Necromancer? Guess we'll see... Nice to know she respects Tolkien's work, so hopefully she'll steer the character toward an interpretation not to far off from the Elves that we know and tolerate.
I would rather be watching Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" and Ridley Scott's "Prometheus"...it's going to be a long few years.

Maybe she's being hypocritical or maybe this new role really does do justice to the film, enough even for a purist to portray... Time will tell

Love interest candidates for Tauriel?
[In reply to]

I'm thinking that she has to be a love interest for one of the canon characters, it would be fairly pointless to introduce something between two characters not in the book at all, I'm thinking (may be wrong of course). We also know it's not Legolas and it seems unlikely to me that it is someone whose casting has not yet been announced. So for me the only candidates are... Bilbo Thorin Bard Thranduil Any other feasible ones... ? I'm making no judgement on the likelihood of any of these - just making a list of possibilities.

The thing about Lindir is that he's not a Hobbit character, but was in LoTR (briefly) so what is the point of concocting a romance between two characters not in the Hobbit book at all. It's not revealing any character facet or motivation of any established character and would be entirely tangential. I suppose that some people might want that but it seems unlikely to me that PJ would do this.

They aren't The Hobbit characters and nothing is known about them so it would hurt less than to hook her up with established canon character like Bard...etc. who is well known.

Maybe there will be, maybe there won't, but I don't think it's inevitable. I'm hoping PJ and co have the imagination to see that just because she's female she doesn't have to fall in love - there are other things she could be doing...

Some unnamed Mirkwood elf of Thranduil's court? Why her love has to be unrequited? She will be beautiful and brave. Why she wouldn't have a chance with high born elf? Are they so vain to think Silvan elves are so lower than them? And it doesn't have to be high born elf. I really hope she won't behave like a silly girl and will dream about some elf from Thranduil's court and think "I have no chance...He is of higher caste and I'm nobody...". Besides that no such character is in cast so it has to be someone who is in the movie and we know it's not Legolas.

I'm assuming a love interest because it's the one obvious thing that is missing from The Hobbit. I personally dont think it's necessary but the existence of the Tauriel character leads me to think it's a strong possibility. But I will also say that there are many ways such a theme could be played out.

He could be in the past, mentioned but not shown. He could could be in the House of Mandros.. An affair would only get in the way of the plot. A tragic past or a hopeless love would deepen the character of Tauriel. Again I repeat take a look at Artemis of the Greeks or Diana of the Romans. This is an archetype.

I expect a storyline of unrequited love is what we'll be getting from Tauriel. Something Shakespearean might be interesting, but nothing too tragic, because you have to leave that for the other canonical characters.
