 Saoirse Ronan is "really disappointed" she couldn't appear in 'The Hobbit'. The 17-year-old actress initially jumped at the chance to work with director Peter Jackson - after previously starring in his adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel 'The Lovely Bones' - but eventually decided she has to concentrate on her Hollywood career rather than moving to New Zealand to be in the film. She said: "I'm really disappointed that I couldn't do it. I really am. Any excuse for me to go back to New Zealand, and work with those people I'd take. "But there are other projects as well that I've had to consider - and to do that for over a year, it wouldn't have left me time to do anything else." More..

the fact that she has "more important" stuff to do in Hollywood but a once in a lifetime chance is right in front of her eyes.It's just beyond me.

...after all, it was her decision, wasn't it - so she could have done it if it had meant that much to her. Bit of a contrast from Richard Armitage saying that he felt if he could get Thorin he wouldn't have minded if he never had another role - of course, he wouldn't wanted to stop there, but....
And if she would have needed a year in New Zealand it must have been quite a big part. Strange. I wish we knew a bit more about Itaril/Tauriel, and whether anything else has changed apart from the name.

I believe the NZ government is working with the film team to work out the visas for the major characters so they can work in NZ for an extended period of time, but I would guess some of the actors for the minor characters have to become work-eligible on their own.
So Ms. Ronan would have had to establish residency and get a work permit before she could accept a role, and she could not commit the time required to get that done.

The stars of movies such as this are more the movies themselves, it's a big ensemble piece. Sure, it can launch careers but it's not like she doesn't have one already. So from an actors perspective, other roles might be more important. Obviously she likes working with PJ but it doesn't seem like she's a huge fan of The Hobbit and it would be a long commitment.

...and is a really good actress. I'd have been happy to see her in The Hobbit but if a more important role came up that she wanted to do then she had every right to chose it. I'm just intrigued by the whole thing. With a role that isn't in the book we have no reliabel source of information but I'd love to know if they changed the actual part when she turned it down, or just the name.

She might just be wanting to make sure that she is considered a genuine working actress rather than simply Peter Jackson's prodigy. It might not be either fair or true, but sometimes things get said which can damage reputations or careers. I find it rather unfortunate that she went for a Meyer role (curse that author's insensitive heart for altering a little-known origin legend which Native children could sometimes be beaten or starved for even talking about!) but she's probably just trying to keep herself from being associated with one particular directer. Even Sean Astin talked about that a little bit in his memoir, about how sometimes actors' careers depend on taking movies they'd rather not do.
