...but it could just be the lighting.
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

Any idea what he's reading? It's a letter from a deposed prince who needs help getting his money our of Mirkwood and wants Bilbo's bank account number.

This is exactly how i pictured all the dwarfs. I wouldn't mind if they leave Richard without prosthetic nose and all that, but a little gray perhaps. It's not a tragedy, but he looks middle aged, not an old dude. We need close ups of each dwarf.

Bilbo is as I would have him. Thorin is as I expected. Gandalf is Gandalf.

I still think it's difficult to tell exactly how Thorin and Company are going to look in the finished film from seeing them in the background of this one shot. They may very well look much older. And Elijah was only 17 when he was cast as Frodo; still pretty young for a Hobbit! I think he did a brilliant job and didn't have a problem with his age at all, but I know a couple of people who still think he was too young to play the role!

maybe middle earth its going to be the same but bilbo is more comical and the thing of the ears and feet being bigger its a good way to express it, he is going to be fun , but brave, and seein g the photo of bilbo and froro as young men i can feel the different spirit of both characters

Yeah, I think Bilbo's wearing very casual clothes because they came on him unexpectedly at home and he's been serving the meal—it's the basics of a male hobbit's wardrobe. And this does look like a staged shot rather than a production still, which the Gandalf photo resembles. I didn't realize how much I missed Gandalf's awesome arm warmers/old man gloves; it gives him such a haphazard, practical air. And I stupidly just realized that the letter is probably his contract. Hee.

......although in a good way and not in an eyes rolling up in the head sort of way, LOL! I wiped my mind clean of any images of dwarves it had received from children's books and concentrated on Thorin's actions and behavior throughout The Hobbit - and this is the picture I came up with: muscular and athletic, regal, arrogant, brooding, an obvious leader. I also expected slightly receding dark hair and a beard with plaits in front of the ears and a touch of grey. I agree those might be grey highlights and we might even have plaits! I'm not uptight about the age and prefer a younger-looking Thorin. It looks as though I got my wish. The costume is great. too.

He's been my favorite character since I first read the brand-new Ballantine paperbacks in 1965. "He had eaten most, talked most, and laughed most." (Hobbit, Chapter 2) What's not to love? Having Ian play him makes it all the better. (I just hope they keep in the line about the cold chicken and pickles!)

I don't have a big problem with a somewhat younger Thorin, so long as he character is basically right. That obviously remains to be seen (and heard).

The ears and feet look ok to me, but they may have had to tweak them, so they would look the same on both actors. Ian and Martin. Their ears are similar but not exactly the same.
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.
